My number two is a 1942 swedish 6.5x55. I put a timney trigger on and changed bolt to cock on opening, added a Boyd's stock and glass bedded. Handloading has got it down to 1/3 MOA. Problem is it tends to open up over longer distances. Does the receiver warrant a new custom barrel and would that fix the spread or is there more things required or is it throwing good money after bad? The rifling is very worn on this old workhorse. Keep in mind I'd want it accurate out past 600.
What distances and how much does it open?
Toby I'll have to get back to you on that. Since I've changed to bipod shooting I can't shoot it better than 1 MOA. However before when I was shooting third MOA at 400 I would be six inches off zero

Are you still looking for 1/3 Mao at 600'yds I can't quite understand the 6 inches off zero, is that a 1/3 moa group at 600 yds or a 6 inch group at 600 yds ? What do you expect at that distance?
Fair comment. Two different measuremts. One third MOA should give 1.3" at 400. 6" off zero is about is about 3moa

Yeah well take a wild guess as to how many rounds have been through a Mauser from the begin of WWII I'd guess the throat is not pristine either. I'm speculating the whole barrel is shagged but good out to 200 which is insufficient as far as what I want.

Likely to cost too much to replace barrel on a swede so either try a recrown as a first cheap step or CAC (Graeme Champion) sometimes has some swede target rifles at a very reasonable price.
Could also try some longer, heavier bullets in them. The 96's like them, I used to get better accuracy out of 160gn than any 140gn.
The thing is if your shooting .3" @ 100 and 6"@ 400 or so it sounds like the issue isn't necessarily the barrel.

and it sounds like you have changed how you shoot which might be adding a couple of inches to your group straight off.
The longer range shots were off a daypack. I'll need to revisit all distances. Also I thought 6.5's we're mild recoil. Mine's not. Although I do have hot loads

Guess it depends how much you want to shoot with it. Re-crown as a start, next step would be to get the throat and chamber refreshed.
Having said that, it is not like the rifle is in original form anymore, so if you see yourself shooting more than 500-1000 rounds with it, a new barrel might be a better investment.
Id be looking at shooting style/position and the load your running. Growth of groups from 1/3moa to 1.5moa within 400 yards would have me first looking at the fiting of the shots before anything else, check parralax on scope, be disciplined in body position
Chrony loads to see what es is etc and if this doesnt solve it then start looking at the rifle
Let me be a bit more blunt. If you are getting 1/3MOA (1/3rd of an inch at 100 yards) at closer ranges and your groups are opening up further out then the rifle isn't fucked, your shooting is. I know this from experience. Try searching the forum for a copy of the "Longrange Shooting" DVD and start from there.
Blunt is good wildman. Since I changed to a different gun Rem Sendero 7mm Mag with similar MOA after load development I'm hitting a 12" target at 850 yards. That's what's got me wanting to revisit my Mauser and get it performing acceptably for me also. At this stage my 100 yard groups have opened up to 1 MOA. Let me get back to ya'll. I need to settle down into it I think. There's got to be a good reason why the guns perform so differently for me.
As others have said, start with the basics of good position and go from there. Eliminating the variables as you go.
