22 cal smoothbore vs rifled 22lr bore RE SHOT SHELLS

Hi All Had a smooth barrel made for testing 22 cal shot shells via a Rossi Monti a while back
have decided to now use this in a Lill Badger banger .. patterns are tighter but today i was just testing the effect of suppressors on pellet spread.
The 22 shot is loaded rather hot compared to a CCI std round fired through this barrel with a ASE Rimfire can fitted ..
My question to the most learned soles is which type of baffle ie flat washer vs K baffle vs sloping washer etc would have the least effect
on the shot spread . RE SHOT SHELLS have no cup wad so at the end of the muzzle they will spread ..
    Thanks for looking

I don't know but my thinking is you will want to be bloody careful with putting a suppressor on there using shot. I've seen shotgun pellets leave barrels at near 45deg in low light so I can't see why you wouldn't have the odd random pellet do the same out of your smooth bore, which could fck the suppressor.
The suppressor would probably need to be one of those solid middle tube type baffles with the gas ports angled back so that shot can't be redirected by the baffle. Don't try a dpt/sonic baffle type or it will catch the odd pellet.

Wouldnt be surprised if most of the shot ends up in the supressor if they spread as soon as they leave the muzzle

The above is all correct. Especially Barry.

I would look at having the end of the barrel portedas Roarless says then fitting an over/underbarrel tube, maybe fill it with steel mesh or wool if you really need to knock down noise. You could shorten it about as much as you like to legal limits obviously, without losing velocity.
Sparrow shot should be stepping out at subsonic velocities so I'm not sure why you think it's hotter?

    Hi 11mms
Sparrow shot as you put it is still a lot louder when shot via an ASE Rimfire suppressor
compared to a round of CCI Standard ammo shot through the same gun and supp..
But reading online Fed. rat shot was louder than the CCI rat shot so maybe i could try some of those ..
    Thanks for all the input

I am absolutely guessing but I uspect there that the shot is not providing much back-pressure for the can to catch, so the gasses come through relatively unimpeded, whereas baffles will catch gas off the turbulance at the heel of a normal .22 projectile.
also suspect that gas volume would be about the same between brands, for the same load and velocity
I have seen a few posts on this forum about supressing shotguns so maybe reach out and those peopel have some advice.

Smooth bore would have to be the way to go, my experience with 12g rifled barrels tells me you could just about stand in front at 20 mtrs and not get hit with a pellet.
Not that any one would have any reason to be shooting shot from a rifled barrel in the first place,

Yeah, apparently there was testing done on this with shot in rifled barrels and the only way they got anything like acceptable patterning out of the shot column was for want of a better description a durable sabot that took a while to fully separate off the shot payload. In effect the spin on the shot flung it wide rather than flying together as a column. The sabot idea wasn't practical either as the payload weight dropped, meaning the shot flew faster meaning the spin was worse, so it was a kind of diminishing returns deal as the sabot took up space for pellets and the charge needed to be dropped to match which ended up going around in circles to a certain point.

I knocked together a suppressed 410, the barrel went right through the supressor tube but was massively ported from 150mm from recever to 60mm from muzle so the last bit of the barrel was continuous and choked. It might not be the most efficient suppressor but it did make a difference

Regards to Barry the Hunter The ugly gun is back
i did some ore testing and decided to try and make a choke for the 22 cal shottie
rough the basic shape with a die grinder burr then finished off with a 7/32 1: 48 ratio tapered reamer
just used a 1/2 x20 long socket and SS bolt as this was just for testing

first test before the taper reamer arrived didnt work at all only 5 pellets on a A4paper
with the taper tool used the inside of the choke was a lot smoother
but still didnt pattern that well with the Winchster #12 shot ammo star crimp left photo above
Mid photo was of some CCI shot shell # 12 this pattern was from the unfinished choke before the reamer arrived
right photo is of the CCI shot via the reamed choke
all shots taken @ 7m and pencil circle is 4 1/2 inches dia
strange the sound of the CCI ammo is a lot quieter
the tighter pattern could be the blue cover that holds some of the CCI shot together after the muzzle
will do some more work on a more refined choke now we are heading in the right way
    cheers to all
