Yeah, apparently there was testing done on this with shot in rifled barrels and the only way they got anything like acceptable patterning out of the shot column was for want of a better description a durable sabot that took a while to fully separate off the shot payload. In effect the spin on the shot flung it wide rather than flying together as a column. The sabot idea wasn't practical either as the payload weight dropped, meaning the shot flew faster meaning the spin was worse, so it was a kind of diminishing returns deal as the sabot took up space for pellets and the charge needed to be dropped to match which ended up going around in circles to a certain point.
