Found a Rem700 .358 win chambered barrel in the rack. I don't own any Remingtons but a rummage in the spare parts department
turned up a m38 Swede action that I can fit this barrel to. It's a 1 in 16 twist Douglas barrel so I'm figuring 18 inch 220-260 grain cast bullet
@ 2200 fps.should be safe enough. Just trying to put together a sub 250 yard goat and deer rifle that doesn't use jacketed projo's or slow burning powder. Anyone with experience with the 358 care to share any thoughts. Boomer.
I've heard the 96 Swede action is stronger than the 94. Can remy barrels be made to fit Mauser actions ok?

Remmy barrels can be turned down to fit small ring Mauser action's easily enough, but there's not enough meat there to fit large ring Mauser or Howa , Vanguard action's I usually build on. Boomer.
for a bush or sub 250 yard round its got to right up there with ideal cartridge.... go on just do it,you really know you want to.
it will have resale value if you try it and decide you want something else.

Looks like it's a go. Found a timney trigger and low swing safety in the drawer and an old ramline stock in the cupboard. I should have something in the way of Weaver mounts and rings lying around here somewhere, so all I'll have to buy or build is a 35 cal over barrel suppressor. I guess most 35 cal cans in NZ are sized for 357 mag, not 358 or 35 Whelan. Boomer.
It's unlikely that you will get near 2200 fps with cast bullets even with gas checks leading will be a major problem. 1600 to 1800 fps is more realistic Factory ammunition in those weights runs at 22 to 2300 fps
I have a Husqvarna in 9.3x57, that's .366 in English money which the 358 is often compared with.
I have used Robert's 285 grain gas checked bullets at 1500 fps and that's plenty for most things.
I have loaded 250 grain woodleighs at 2200 fps and shot a scrub bull with it range being just under 100 yds, my heart was going like buggery he was an angry boy, one in the shoulder was enough but a second was ready to go.
For goats and deer it's certainly enough gun but it's no speedster so you need to be aware of the trajectory.

With full power loads I count on it being a 300 mtr load with a 200 mtr zero.
I'm running 1 gr under book max Varget under 225 gr Game King's for about 2400-2450 fps (none calibrated crony).
This just pole axes whatever it hits and can be very destructive inside 200 mtr.
I have played with subsonic 220gr HP cast bullets. They kill but only the same as a black powder load would, ie you get a 40 cal hole through your game but no shock so even a good lung shot animal can travel a long way, hence you need to hit heart, front legs, spine, Penetration is good.
What works better for me shooting goats and for finishing shots is using 158gr XTP Pistol bullets over trail boss at about 16-1700 fps.
This opens up well, is fast enough to do decent internal damage to give a fast kill but still exits with cross chest rib shots on goats.
I have wound them up to 2500 fps but that's really only for goats further out or rabbits.
So I have settled on the 225gr GK for deer and 158gr xtp over trail boss for goats at short range.
Run a Hardy 35 cal Compact Suppressor, made my brass from Winchester 308.
Without the suppressor and shorter barrel you and everyone else know you are shooting something different.

Had a couple of days off the tools, but got this one fitted, rereamed, and headspaced. It's in a stock and wearing a cheapo panamax 3-9.
Spent some time today lubesizing 400 Rcbs 200gr fn cast 50/50 lead / lino. Load development starts in the morning.
I'm not sure how to post photos off this POS phone so I'll see if I can sort a new cable for my camera and start doing this stuff on the laptop.
Bloody Boomer generation eh, can run a lathe and mill but struggle with the techno stuff. By the way, I figure I'm hooked, used my brothers 358 BLR
on three USA trips over the years on elk, black bear and moose. So I have some history with the round with 225 partitions on game, just zero cast bullet
experience in this caliber. Boomer
