    6mm 284

    Hi all
been a member for a wee while, haven't posted bugga all but have found some of the threads informative.

Was looking to replace 22-243 with a lighter rifle. Was getting heavy to carry around

    Picked the 6mm 284.

Thought I'd post pic of my fairly new 6mm 284. Greg Duley put it together

Barrel is an imported fluted 26'' bartlien, Action is Tikka T3, stock is carbon fibre
Total weight is 7 1/2 lbs

Re loads -Greg found some bullets caused excess copper fouling. The 105gn Berger Hybrid suffered least. Also the 95 gn Accubond did result in bit of fouling, but am using that also. Mainly or closer shots. A fouling shot was needed initially, but doesn't seem to be now.

MV is 3400fps for the bergers using 57 gns RL26 and Norma cases.
    Scope is a Swaroski Z5 3.5-18 * 44 P.

Only a hunting rifle. bit wary of barrel wear. Hunt mainly in central Tararuas and Ruahines and an annual expedition to the west coast/Canterbury. taken it on a few trips so far, happy with the Bergers and Accubond. Bergers seem don't seem to drop deer as quick, in close shots but been good over 200 yards

Groups usually half MOA or less. tested distance on the range, out to 600 yards and performs good. Will try bit further soon. Have been rapt with the consistent accuracy

Bipod is a lightweight Javelin Long. Weighs 157 grams

Havent seen much on the forum, bout 6-284

My other rifle is a 22-243. swapped my Winchester70 243 barrel to 22-243 with a true Flite barrel. Settled on Swift Scirroco 62 and 75 gn bullets and had good results on Red deer. Velocity was pretty quick but a bit difficult to get grouping consistently

Prior to the 243, have always used a .222 Anshultz

How do you find the Javelin Bipod? They look like a good bit of kit but pretty expensive too!

Another 6mm-284 - they are becoming common - but a good choice - I took it as a go between the 22-250 and 270, though now thinking about a 22-284.

    I re-barreled a .270 Sako A7 to 6mm-284 1:8 twist - still working on loads - but working on 62 - 95gr. A 270 is used for the heavier loads.

I would not worry about the barrel - should be good for 1,000 rounds - and as you reload everything - just factor those savings in for the new barrel.

@Link. The javelin IS expensive. especially as I lost one out of my pocket. Its still laying in the tussock at Carkeek Ridge in Tarries. That's only disadvantage, how to carry them. I have a belt pouch for 2ns one, but that is inclined to come unlatched.. So I tie nylon around the flap. Or if wearing rain jacket, carry in breast pocket, zipped up. Don't find difficult to setup after spotting animals. Locking the extending legs took bit getting used to. Like the weight, lots

@Doghead. 22-284will be a rocket! I initially looked at going from 22-243 to 6mmTTH. (bit faster .224 bullet). Kiwi Greg actually put me onto the 22-243. was the simplest of that sort calibre to resize cases. Hoping 6mm will last 1000 rounds, will be happy with that.

    Cheers

lol so the bug hit after that great shot you made with the Duleys that was shown on thier TV show.... great to hear you are having good results with rifle...Im guessing its like any other cartridge in that there will be some really good projectiles out there, just a matter of finding the ones that work best.....I do wonder if something like a 80grn all copper jobbie might just be the ducks nuts as you will be pushing it faster than the .243 guys it should be even better and hold the needed velocity long enough to be very usefull. I wasnt at all a fan of copper jobbies but seeing what a 50grn ttsx does from the .223 has really opened my eyes....if nothing else it MIGHT be a better option for your close up shots as will be little chance of it blowing up completely.

G'day @Tararuas hunter... 3400fps from a 105gr Berger is a mighty hot load for that bullet / cartridge combo. Like hotter than Mr. Naidoo's maximum Phaal curry... ring sting alert! I've just Quickload-ed the details you gave us, that's like 68-70,000 psi man. Why do it?

I would have thought you'd find it hard to find a high BC 6mm bullet that will hold together sub-250m, at those velocities. The Accubond (90gr not 95) is a tough bullet but not high BC, and you can shoot that from a .243 Win at 3200fps or thereabouts.

No offence at all - these things are always interesting - but what's the point? Just something to do, something interesting? Which I totally understand. No criticism intended, just asking why step outside the pretty well established 6mm design limits? There's only a few percent here and there (10%?) between regular cartridges (e.g. 6mm Creedmoor) and wildcat barrel burners that push the pressure limits. But those few percent can be enough for a bullet to work, or not work well at all, to the detriment of the animal (and the barrel). I'm no expert by the way, just been around a few spectacular wildcat high velocity failures over the years.

To my mind, I'd be focusing on the bullet construction real hard, as its not really on to use bullets outside their terminal performance limits. The Bergers are well iffy past a certain point (in my experience). And I say that as a hunter who chooses bullets at the frangible end, rather than the controlled expansion end, of the terminals spectrum. But my MVs are normal, not supercharged.

Just some honest feedback... Velocity is great, but too much can be a problem! Physics always wins mate. I'd be looking at the 103gr ELD-X as an option, and you need to reconsider powder, AR2209 should get you under pMax, around 60,000psi, for 3300fps, which is a good return though I'd still be wary of the close up performance at those speeds.

You don't say what the twist rate of the 6mm-284 is?

I've just realised @Tararuas hunter that the 90gr Sierra GameChanger could be perfect for you, if you turn down the heat behind it a little.

Would be hard to come up with an end result like that for much under $4K - original Tika, barrel, stock, fluting, labour.

Its pretty special being able to design what you want from scratch. Im sure its worth it to TH.

TH, do you just have to resize the 284 cases and stuff a 6mm projectile in? No neck turning or anything?

@Tahr, I think $4000 would be very cheap!
cases are necked down from 6.5*284. And neck turned
@Flyblown, All good. not sure if Sierra were tried, initially. I didn't set up initial loads. whole lot of projectiles 90 gns up were tried. excessive copper fouling was occurring in all but Bergers. including Barnes . Happy with accubond and bergers. I wore throat out on the 22-243 testing too many bullets
Don't know much about pressures, load for 95 gn accubond is 57 gns RL26.
Initial load for Bergers was 56gn. Upped it a wee bit, still groups same. At 300 yards plus, seem to be very effective. most shots have been 200 - 300, and no problems
haven't really shot a whole lot with it, though
your right, got weight wrong, its 90gn.

No signs on primers or on the cases (got a lot with the 22-243).
Closeup Bergers seem be bit fragile, so use the Accubond

Forgot to say, twist is 1:8.

@Micky Duck. The rifle of the Duleys used impressed my wife with its light weight, and insisted I get one to. so I did.
except added few inches on the barrel. and added the Swaro!
Apparently MVs are high with 80 gn etc bullets, but got this setup for using heavier.
use 62 gn solid Barnes in the 22-243 but they basically lost all the petals and left with cylindracle stub. dont know if that's a good thing or not, MV was 3800 as I recall. Thought it was bit too quick

Forgot, have since added the Swaroski Ballistic Turret to the scope, which is great to use. set out to 700 yards, which I doubt I'll ever go to

Use enough of any make and you'll find a one that fouls badly.

    Very nice gun Tararuas Hunter
