8.6blk - anyone here in nz have one....

    thinkin of building one.

I have a rem700 carbon stug stock sitting there doing nothing. So a rem700 short action, and a barrel... but unsure of which barrel to go for.. twist rate, length, will be to run subs out to 250-300 is possible.

wouldn't you also need to get very soft 338 cal bullets. (Guess the very fast twist helps with expansion)
Most 338 bullets are deigned for the higher velocities of the larger powder burners.
At least with the 35 and 375 cal's you can get pistol bullets and cast lead.

Not to say that building an 8.6BLK would not be a talking point and you would have the only one at the range.

I think the boys at Dead eye Dicks were playing around with 338 subs a few years back

There's a couple of sub 338 you can get, around 300gr, and apparently the 1.3 twist bbl is not a necessity, and as "high" as a 1.7 will be fine. I was thinking if something around 12-16insh long, 1-7 twist and then finding a reamer would be the next hard part l guess. But I'm all for it... rather build that than a 300blk

    @Larskramer Vulcan do a 338 1:9" barrel

You will also need dies and a reamer

And you would get two barrels out of one 30" blank

Would be interested as to how quiet one would be.
The bigger the hole in the suppressor the harder it is to keep quiet especially if running a short barrel and heavy for caliber projectiles.

pac nor and x-caliber barrels both do fast twist
faxon does a prefit for the rem700

yeah even a 1-7 isnt fast enough for what I want 1-5 would be great and 1-3 is working to the design

they went as fast as 1-1 at Q

dead eye dicks made me a 338 whisper about 12 years ago. Very quiet and with the 300 g bullet the deer just looked up when hit walked a couple steps and fell over. The bullet tumbled in side and made a big mess and drove right through a side on shot

mmm 338BLK it would be a thing of beauty

I had a Rem700 in 338WM and used to shoot subs out of it. I still have the mold for 220grain projectiles

I think we have already discussed the thing here with wingman .
1 in 9” will stabilize your 300 grainers subsonic even at a 1000 yards.

I saw those videos regarding the super fast twist, unfortunately it seems that lathe turned copper projectiles can only be shot through those fast twist barrels as the rpm are too fast for conventional projectiles. So you are looking at Lehigh type projectiles . Not the cheapest.

The cast lead projectiles should work in a 1 in 9” at a guess, but again in a very fast twist barrel it might not be that great.

Are dies and quality brass available at all?

Hamish at nzmilsurps was bringing some of these in. Not sure how far away they are.

Yes, I hunted with a .338 whisper for many years with good sucsess. The parent case was the 7mm BR necked up to .338.
I shot the 300gr subs on paper at 1000y with @Friwi and they were still very stable.
Back in the early production days of whisper we ran custom Shilen 1:8" twist .338 barrels with 300gr SMKs. The long bullets kill by tumbling after impact not by expanding.
I also ran 160gr Barnes tipped bullets at super sonic speeds which dropped many goats.
I later built a few on Trueflite 1-9" twist barrels too and they were still stable with subsonic 300gr smks and Bergers.
The 1:3" twist is a total marketing gimmick and would cause serious pressure with anything other than subs and the bore fouling would be horrendous. Useless for anything other than a cnc copper $5 gimmick bullet
