    Alcoholic ginger beer

    Anyone had a go?

Made ginger beer years ago as a kid, last year a mate gave me some of his and it had a definite kick (he reacted to hops in commercial beer).

Roktoy brought along some Macs ginger beer that was rather tasty so thinking of giving it a try, can't be too hard as long as I don't blow the house up right?

Lol but interested where this thread goes.
There is a few commercial ginger beers on the market now containing alcohol.

Trying to avoid this.... Balloon over the top instead of screwing the cap on helps .
@veitnamcam indeed there is and it is good but wondering if I can make my own for cheaper... Probably work out costing more but hey it keeps me busy over winter

Think I'll have to add a few things ontothe shopping list for the big smoke once the snow clears enough to get to town

I would think that a balloon over the top would prevent it from "getting fizzy" (I'm sure theres a proper term for that but I'm having a mental blank kind of a day..)

Carbonation. The balloon allows for the gases to expand it without the 'boom'

Mum made some when we were kids. Left a crate of it on the freezer when we went away for the weekend. When we got back they'd all gone boom. Glass everywhere.

@Shearer would know ..I suspect all you really need to do is swap out the yeast for brewers yeast to get the alcohol?

That said there is something surprisingly enjoyable about a tipple of cold ginger beer with a bit of kick!

If there is no oxygen present yeast will produce alcohol. Aloholic gingerbeer will probably have been left longer, maybe a bit more sugar added.

Those PET bottles can hold over 150 psi (I've checked), and even then the bit that went was the cap where I'd drilled a hole and chucked a tyre valve in. Maybe don't put quite thaaat much sugar in?
