So what the BP cast lead load is screaming at me is that the nitro load that only half filled the case is very inconsistent and that the BP load which is 105% full is very consistent
I had better fire up the lead casting pot and make myself a heap more of those 360 grainers.
And maybe order that Lyman 457122 330 grain hollow point mould I like the look of
I've been using orange nail polish on the foresight of my single shot, cheap (ex $2 shop), very bright, waterproof and easily touched up.
So where do you guys buy your glow in the dark nail polish ?
Could also be good on the fore sight Attachment 250237
Mix glow powder with clear epoxy or nail polish.
If you want some, I have plenty and can send you some.
I just did these two tests
45-60 50 grains 1 1/2 FG Black powder 350 grain PC Cast lead bullets.
30m from a leaning bench
Bottom group was shot first and wiped clean between each shot. So shot number 1 could be called cold bore / fouler
Top group was shot without cleaning between shots. But was shot at about 1 minute intervals similar to the time it took to clean and shoot during the first group.
I will re shoot this group again soon as a clean cold bore hunting group and see what its real world usefulness.
Bear in mind that the sights while excellent for snap shooting are not great for target or long range accuracy.

Seems happiest slightly dirty which isn't that uncommon.
@Marty Henry You talking about me or the rifle ? !
Seems happy at least to shoot clean or dirty well enough for the intended large target species
I get told to change in the boot room and have a shower before going inside if I had a bit of a BP session especially if it's been with the muzzle loaders.
Clean cold bore 30m proof of concept shot this evening
First shot ever at an animal so happy with the entire project
Reload all the cases from todays range session and hunting and go look for something bigger

Today i put 4 cold bore clean shots on target at various ranges to check bullet drop for hold over.
25 and 50m are perfectly on point of aim and suit my purpose
70m and 95m are easy to hold over for
I will test out to 150m because the sights might be good for that if needed and useful to know for follow up shots
White blade sight was hard to use on light target background in the longer shots
But should be ok on a red deer
And blade looks wider than the bull at 95m

You are an inspiration, I doubt ill get to half your level. But it is my passion to play with metal and I intend to give it a go!
Thanks for the inspiring stories man!
great project and writeup you have passion well done thanks for sharing
Greetings,
This is one of the old NZDA 100 metre targets compatible with the use with iron sights. The bit of black DPC represents the blade fore sight a it would appear to the shooter. You held with a faint white line showing over the top of the blade and with the blade centred
inside the outer ring. NRA targets just had the half circle.

Regards Grandpamac.
@grandpamac Yes that would be an excellent target for a blade front sight and I could easily use a stencil to block out the white section and spray a much bigger dazzle dot as @Marty Henry has also mentioned
Considering this is seriously not a target rifle I am very happy with how it shoots and every shot I have fired with it so far at paper would have been a killing shot on a game animal.
It's just nice to find alternative iron sight set ups that can still do the job well with old eyes and much older rifles
This whole thread is just WOW!
With your targets, use a stencil to make your circle rather than just a blob of dazzle with no defined edge or centre. The human eye is round for a reason, make decent targets for it to look at and the groups may very well tighten up.
For iron sights I've been using a target that looks like an upside down capital T drawn in black against a white background.
The vertical leg makes it easy to centre the l/r, and allowing just the faintest white line between the foresight and the horizontal line gets elevation taken care of. for 100m I use black duct tape with 200mm long strips, it seems the perfect size for my eyes.
Great thread , you got to be happy with the result as well , very impressive and rifle looks fantastic as well
Ha, I think some people don't fit your descriptive up there - rose tinted line eyeballs that only see what they want to!
There are a few different iron sight targets floating about including the one used by cadets for the No8 and No9 rifles. They all seem to look like the one pictured above and it seems that only the size changes to reflect the ranges being shot. The only other option is the one designed for use with the globe front sight and not the blade which uses circular targets without the white bottom section.
And the very last task is engrave its caliber and barrel twist.
There is nothing else to do apart from taking it hunting

Well engraving it wasn't the last task
I brought this gutted canvas covered hard case
Had the lock off it straight away and did repairs and keyed
Won't be a huge job to sort the interior and find two straps for it
