Thread: Because I'm not busy enough...

As the title says, with hunting, shooting (and associated reloading), spearfishing, freediving, training a deer dog, cricket and trying to stay out of trouble with the Mrs I don't have enough on my plate so figured I'd start a new project.

I've got absolutely no clue about welding but I figured I'd have a crack at making a BBQ. @BRADS offered to lend me his gasless MIG so I was off to steel and tube to pick up some bits ...
I grabbed a couple of 44 gallon drums off TM

I then set to work getting rid of the paint and cutting out the lid. I cut and welded a box steel frame


I then cut some heavier box steel for legs and pissed about trying to get them square. I then stood the bastard up and welded some hinges on to attach the lid.
A couple of lengths of angle iron make a lip for the lid. I managed to find a piece of stainless mesh to use as the grill (shit stainless is expensive).

Still got plenty to do. I'm going to add a bit of flat bar shaped to the contour of the lid to act as a flange for a better seal. Going to shorten the legs and add wheels. Warming rack needs to go in and I'm going to buy a rotisserie set up to run through the middle. Also going to make up a burner by drilling some holes in a bit of box steel and coming up with a way to attach a gas regulator for when I can't be bothered with charcoal or want low heat for smoking (also going to get a cold smoke generator). Got to add wooden panels to the sides and a shelf underneath.

I'll post more updates one I've replaced the wire spool in the welder and can continue progress.

BBQ looks great.
Drop the cricket and you will have more than enough time to do everything else.

It starts with a I can do it attitude.

Add a counterweight to the back of the lid. Make it stick out beyond the hinges so you're not lifting the full weight of the lid when you open it. Get the weight and geometry right and the lid will only lift so far and no further because the counterweight has rotated downward and hits the back of the body of the BBQ.

Smiths city have those rotiisserie kits,although a dozen beers and a scrounge round the boys for some discards or ideas could see you spit roasting a nice wee pig or lamb on that there device. one of them 20litre plastic food drums is also handy as a keg for beers on the big jobs(which in my eyes this is!)
Im thinking a 12v car wiper motor running through a series of bicycle gear cogs and chain with a suitably welded steel rod or smallish diameter tube. actually ye old 1/4horse washing machine motor could also power it!!

squire I made one years ago out of an old stainless steel sink bench.using my trusty warehouse 100mm angle grinder cut out another hole for a second sink(ancient enamelled thing possibly from noahs kitchen in the ark),then got two steel plates from somewhere and added two cheap but cheerful chinese gas rings (also warehouseIIRC).primitve but shit on song i could cook a feed for a bloody army ,as long as i had a full beer sitting on me fence paling shelf above me hot plates.

Looks awesome man. I have a similar project in mind to get more cold smoke volume. I have just been using a smokai bolted to a re-purposed bbq top smoker and while it works well, can't fit much in it. This spearfishing malarky certainly puts a bit of food on the table!

Im in the wrong bloody local for this spearfishing...bought one this time last year(speargun) hasnt been in salt water yet.

Looks good. If you are learning to weld, a project like this is a good start. It lets you do something and will be very forgiving of the welds as there is not a lot of force wanting to tear them apart.

I had the same idea a little while back that I think I will pursue when I get through my next couple rifles.

A number of years back I bought a bradley electronic smoker. I had some success and some things were not great. Since then I have tried some really good smoked meat and reckon it's worth another go but not the electronic way, the traditional way. Might not be every weekend but I have enough weekends with a day to spare that its probably worth giving it a go and making a nice smoker.

Yeah had thought about that, not sure I'd would get away with it in the middle of auckland though.....

Gotta be a few cod or somthing to shoot at down your neck surely? I love it. Been a great filler while rehabbing my knee
