Looks good. If you are learning to weld, a project like this is a good start. It lets you do something and will be very forgiving of the welds as there is not a lot of force wanting to tear them apart.

I had the same idea a little while back that I think I will pursue when I get through my next couple rifles.

A number of years back I bought a bradley electronic smoker. I had some success and some things were not great. Since then I have tried some really good smoked meat and reckon it's worth another go but not the electronic way, the traditional way. Might not be every weekend but I have enough weekends with a day to spare that its probably worth giving it a go and making a nice smoker.

Looks like a pretty nice project you have going.

Thought I'd bring this thread back to life. After a long winter of sitting in the garage getting rusty, the BBQ drew some attention over the weekend. The plan had been to go hunting but @Pop Shot bailed on me and I didn't feel much like sitting in the wet bush by myself for the weekend.

I'll chuck up a couple of photos from my phone but you won't be able to see too much difference from the last lot. The thing had lots of surface rust so I dealt with that with the wire wheel. Then I welded a couple of supports for the lower shelf and put the flat bar flange around the lid (more for aesthetics than anything). I made a handle by screwing in a couple of eye bolts and pushing a length of dowel through, I will need to paint this at some point soon.

I have also done the first coat of heat-resistant paint and bought some qwila for the sides.

    Pics to follow

I like that word. Gonna use it now.

keep on it dorkus-then ensure the bastards turning up for its christening bring plenty of meat and fluids! If some bugger produces something undrinkable it either serves as a marinade or...a BBQcleaner
Smiths city or one of those type stores usually have the battery powered rotisserie which is ok for chooks.an old window wiper motor off a car might give a little more oomph.Macca your an auto sparky ???can you offer an opinion.

still got to screw down the qwila and stain and secure the bottom shelf. Then it's just the cold smoke and rotisserie attachments.

    Looks really good Dorkus

You have restored my faith in kiwi blokeyness.

Honestly I was one step away from lobbying Parliament(if and when we get one) to make welders a permit to procure item.

The shit I see that some guys mate(usually him but wont admit it) made or "fixed"

Dont show me closeups it looks good from there

Possibly give the quilla 20mm or more clearance from the firebox

Yeah come you think of it @vietnamcam, shit outside the fire box not catching on fire is probably a good option.

What RPM you going to rotate at! I may have a small 230vac motor but it only does 1 rpm, you probably need 3 rpm, maybe small chain drive, geared up? PM me

macca seen another DIY effort that used sprockets&chain off a pushbike which turned the mechanism-that was 12v powered by a wiper motor.
