Bolt jeweling advice

Hi fellas, Ive recently inherited my grand fathers model 70 lightweight in 270, I want to restore this rifle back to its former glory with some modern touches.. who offers bolt jeweling services in NZ? Google isnt being very helpful for this, for anyone who has done this before i want to get the rifle cerakoted in time when im ready but should I be cerakoting the bolt before jeweling or afterwards? Im talking about the bolt handle and ends being cerakoted not the jeweled bolt body. Any advice welcome, thanks Troy

your ceracoat is a paint type job..the jeweling is machine marks....either way wont matter,if painting/spraying the areas not wanted done get masked off... its cosmetic at end of day...

Agree. Even if this order just allows the gunsmith to fixture the bolt without worrying about damaging a ceracoted surface.

if you look at my .308 build, they look mint fluted if you don't mind that look

Thanks for the comments fellas, I’ve got plenty of ideas floating around in my head and just want to make educated decisions. William I love your fluted bolt! I just feel maybe jeweling it like they come factory may be more in line with what I’m trying to achieve, my grandad would say what the hell did you do that for if I fluted the bolt �� was bloody fine as it was. That’s a pc explanation of what he would say, my grandad is still alive and kicking so I am looking forward to presenting the rifle to him “restored” and hopefully taking some more animals with it

You can do it yourself, with a simple wooden jig to hold the bolt. Put a standard old school pencil with an eraser tip on it in the drill press and line up your bolt underneath and gently bring it down to create the "swirl", rinse and repeat until you've done the bolt body. May need a few pencils though cos it tends to wear out the eraser tip.

I seem to remember back in the seventies, trolling through gun mags, that DIY bolt jeweling was a reasonably common thing. Not all that difficult if you’re a bit handy. Was actually thinking about having a crack myself on the P14 bolt but I have no real emotional or special attachment to it so just an exercise. Not the case for you though, so probably best to have a pro do it.

If you want to do it yourself use grinding paste on a felt bob with it in a drill press as Husky said.
It is a bit of a long winded process but can be rewarding if you want to add a personal touch.
