    Bore Cleaner -Ed's Red

Mate was asking about this. The recipe is

Equal parts ATF, kerosine, acetone and turpentine.

Mix in well ventilated room and gloves.

Cheapo alternative is to soak the bore in kero and wipe with pull thru.

Leave the acetone out. It attacks stock finishes. All of the recipes are online

Acetone and ATF is meant to be a primo penetrative oil.

I made about 10 litres of this in the 70's and still have a little left. The Acetone helps mix in the Lanoline.
I used water soluble oil and hot water on Blackpowder guns and 303's and other guns with corrosive primers and finished up with home made EDS RED and have never had any problems with rust.
Also a great fan of LANOX which I discovered in the freezing works which we lathered on every moving part on chains and boning rooms.
EDS RED is a powder solvent, gun lube, and rust preventative but will not remove copper or plastic wad fouling.

Been using it for a few years. Does a good job cleaning. So does carby cleaner.

For exterior surfaces I've recently started trying lanolin based grease. I apply it with a tooth brush as it's sticky stuff. Smells good too. Lol.
That grease also seems to make a good case lube as well.

Acetone helps break down carbon, it's not as effective by half without it. Pretty nasty to handle though...

One note, the recipe says melt the lanolin to mix it but the first time I tried this I tried to pour the molten lanolin into the rest of the mix into a standard chemical bottle with the narrow neck and normal coke bottle size lid. The lanolin blocked the funnel, the heat of the molten lanolin caused a rapid expansion of the bottle content and there was a spontaneous reversal of flow direction. And an unscheduled undies change, no other real harm done apart from a primo mess... Mix in an open top container and transfer when mixed, make sure your container (and lid) are acetone rated as I've found a few where the bottles are good for a while but the lids aren't and die young!

A little footnote, lanolin has a very low melting point, a bit like butter. but it has very good rust prevention properties and because of it's low melting point it can run into nooks and crannies with ease so can get to places others can not.
