    Character building

Nothing like some Sunday avo character building.
Finished the bedding job and the thread from the bolt got stuck. I thought it would be a good idea to just tap it the last little bit instead of unscrewing it. I put it in the vice and used a punch to gently tap the pin out.
Turns out the bedding compound holding the bolt in was stronger than the surrounding wood.
All that work inletting the stock pretty much down the drain.
I have glued it, but the finish won’t ever be the same

If a couple of gentle taps did that then it was probably going to break anyway. Thinking that will ease the pain a bit.

Yep, if that's the grain direction through the magazine well, you might want to think about reinforcing across the grain on the inside of the stock to prevent future splits.

Yeah to be fair it was probably more of a firm tap. It was the vice pretty securely, so I did not expect that to happen. I just popped out to the shed while the kids were distracted. Should have taken my time.
I’m just guttted as I have been sitting on this for months as I have been too busy with work/life to get onto it. Finally got it bedded over the last couple of days then I go and do this.
Now I don’t know if I will even finish it, as the join will likely always be visible. I’ll see how it comes up in a couple of days once the glue has set and I’ll give it a bit of a sand up

Yup as a burnt out fitter turner that's spent a few years mucking about in the coal mines on the coast, some in open cut mining and now as a maintenance engineer, there are quite a few of those times when in 30 or less seconds you would have it done and something goes wrong making it an absolute crunt to fix.
A tap the breaks on the way out but decides to be tight, thread stripped, broken something.
Not always anyone's fault either but doesn't make it any less frustrating.
I will say though I do prefer the completely unforeseen types that I have had no input in over the ones that I've made a mistake in.
Big thing is everyone cocks it up sometimes, it's how you fix it that matters.
If it was easy everyone could do it.
My experience is from busted knuckles, sprained things, hair ripped out and the odd stern telling off from the boss lol
    Yeah not always funny though

I hear what you're saying csmiffy, been a maintenence fitter for the last 25 years and there's times you just have to gently put the tools down, take a few deep breaths and move on calmly with the solution. I've seen guys completely loose their shit when things go wrong and take hours to make it right. Patience is your friend.

Well I got it out of the clamps and gave it a quick sand up. It actually came up ok. The join is visible under the right light but not hugely obvious. It’s still straight too so I think it’s actually salvageable. Unfortunately the bedding job didn’t come up too well. I realised too late that the bolt holes were slightly too big and the compound was leaking out the bottom. Made a few holes annoyingly.
