Just degrease the outside of the gun and expose it to the elements to let it gently rust, and oil it when it's done. A quite durable retro-looking coat, makes an AK look authentic, like you got it from a Kazakhstan sheep farmer.

my project rifle had something like this on it when I got it.
Put on pretty thick, not that flash.
I was thinking of doing this with a rifle using colour matched spray cans. I am going to research this and find out if very fine rattle can tips are available and if you can get epoxy mix here.
