You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

I have bought some ‘Queens Ebony’ for my stock making from an outfit in Matamata, they sell on TM. It is grown in the islands, is fairly dense, very hard but not particularly dark. Chocolate brown, but not black like the real deal. The quality is ok, I found a couple of pieces that were no good for use due to drying checks.

I bought (pure black) gabon ebony in from a supply house in the US but ebay is another source although that is indonesian ebony and is very dark/almost black when the finishing oils are applied.

Go to Exotic Hardwoods and this is on page 2 here https://www.cuestik.com/canxan-negro...zonia/ew-cnb6/

I do a bit of bone carving and use ebony sometimes to go with it. One can still find ebony figurines etc in 2nd hand shops. I buy them up when I find them and break them down and recarve them.

Like others have said, keep your eyes out for figurines/carvings on trademe and 2nd hand stores. Sometimes you end up with shit wood thats dyed black, other times you strike gold.

@Von Gruff Knives nice one. Great idea to use a billiard cue supplier. What do they sting you for freight?

If you want puriri you could split your way through this pile, the piece you want is underneath that lot, as you can see puriri doesn't have heart wood in the trunk, only the branches....seriously though I could send a bit for you to play with.

And then there is teak, this stick has been laying in the elements so long all the splitting has already taken place, I could shorten it and send you a bit if you want to have a play with it.
