I wanted one of those big green egg bbq's but my scottish heritage didnt want to pay $1800 bucks for one so i had a go at making one. works real well, gets up over 400 degrees, and will sit at 200 degrees for hours without any stoking or adjusting. it is slightly small though, couldnt do a whole leg of lamb.

I've got an unused 400l oil bowser at work I'm considering doing something like that to. Should be big to do a hindquarter of beef at a time ;) (no I wouldn't do that)

I was thinking more along the lines of a door in the side? It's big enough for two or three adults to cram into (about 1200 around, 1500 high, a cylinder stood on end), so leaning in would be a mission. I'm more stuck for somewhere for it live once I've done it hahahahaQuote:

what have you used for insulation? i made one from a 9kg bottle, but had varying success roasting chickens. (1 out of 3 were good to eat) could not maintain a constant temp with it closed up for roasting. tried opening a vent etc
i used fire cement. its got a vent at the bottom and another at the top,and the fire is up in a bowl so it gets air all around it.
Would be good for a smoker
