Bought some bits off Brownells to build a carbine upper, but the front sight they had was a standard A2 one, not the F-marked version.
So I could either import a + 0.040 post, or modify one of my spares...
What you start with : standard sight post
Ground off the post, seems to be a mild steel casting. Made an alu plug to hold the threaded end in the lathe chuck (drilled and tapped 8-36). Then some very careful drilling with a 1.5mm bit, and tapped it for M2x0.4
Next up : making the replacement post. Initially tried using some brass, but the rotational force kept snapping it off. So dug around in my stash and found some stainless aloy rod.
Used a button die to thread that after turning it down, and then some more fine turning to thin out the post to around 0.050.
Pretty happy with the result. Just needs to be primed and painted after I figure out the final length.
Next up a jig to drill the pin holes in the front sight base.
