    Extended length AR sight post

Bought some bits off Brownells to build a carbine upper, but the front sight they had was a standard A2 one, not the F-marked version.

So I could either import a + 0.040 post, or modify one of my spares...

What you start with : standard sight post

Ground off the post, seems to be a mild steel casting. Made an alu plug to hold the threaded end in the lathe chuck (drilled and tapped 8-36). Then some very careful drilling with a 1.5mm bit, and tapped it for M2x0.4

Next up : making the replacement post. Initially tried using some brass, but the rotational force kept snapping it off. So dug around in my stash and found some stainless aloy rod.

Used a button die to thread that after turning it down, and then some more fine turning to thin out the post to around 0.050.

Pretty happy with the result. Just needs to be primed and painted after I figure out the final length.

Next up a jig to drill the pin holes in the front sight base.
Beaker, FRST, Cyclops and 3 others like this.

@res, what is the specific issue around service class eligibility ?

I stress that I dont care making open sights better is a good thing imho and of course your just setting out to make the corect hight post, but I think you said it was for a service rifle build so fyi from the match code

    http://www.wsra.org.nz/SMC5_2016.pdf

Page 25 9.3.3.1 AR15 Open Sights: A1/A2 sights, flat top receivers may use a carrying handle sight or a clip on Milspec type of sight. Front post must be a minimum of 0.050 inch and rear peephole sizes are to be no smaller than A2 Milspec standard. Sights that co-witness with an Aimpoint style scope are acceptable. Fibre optic or “Hi Viz” type front posts are not acceptable.

It could also be a issue under both the "as issued" and "advandge" rullings.

Most people wouldent notice, and of those geeks that do most like me wouldent care but as you seemed to take your service class optics hunt seriously I thought you may just want to make sure you didnt indavertanly get caught out

I'm happy for anything I use in a comp to be inspected...

this is for a backup upper, we have 1 shoot at WSRA that is carbine specific, the rest is for "full size" setups

50 thou is the same round or square, so can't see that being an issue. be pretty hard pressed to argue the competitive advantage side as well.

the only part of the match code that may apply is the "as issued" section, but I suspect that if we start looking hard at most of the rifles on the line, a lot of folks would fall foul of that one

having said that, there are several rule nazis out there who love to nitpick other peoples gear rather than spending time improving their own shooting, hehe

Happily, I've found that SR is a very supportive environment to newer competitors, and have never been nitpicked in the slightest.

How wide is the sight anyway? You'll prob find that the layer of paint will bring it out to .050 anyway? The only whingers will be the large bunch of optics guys you beat shooting irons (me included)
