Gess what I`m doing.

Hi all, yep have set up one of the 4140 steel shafts in my lathe ready to drill a .444" hole in for 28". Now running two oil pumps for more volume and pressure and mixed in 5ltrs of Coolcut cutting oil to my hydraulic oil, should help keep the drill sharp and cool. And speaking of sharp I worked out a way to sharpen my gun drills on my lathe with a small diamond grind wheel, used to cost me $50 each to get them sharpened, can't beat do it your self. IF it comes out any good still thinking what rifling twist should I do, 1-18" or 1-20" with a 27" barrel. :cool:. Pic`s of the setup.

It`s my bloody brew that does that, thakes controle of ma fingres . The grenlins are creeping in, set my drilling rig going, oil pressure at 400psi and it`s pissing out off the barrel stock end, I hadn't pushed the stock hard onto the drill guide seal ring. :omg: Buugggger!!. So the car looks nice and shiny, the garage walls and ceiling are nice and clean," O darling, I see you have cleaned the car AND the garage, and you have had a bath to!!!, wonders will never séance. :o Mums the word. So I`m starting all over again, some days it pays to stay in bed.

After a few brews all is back on line and going good, resharpened the drill, all set up again and back into it. After a day on it I have about 14" to go in to give me a 28" deep hole. I can't lay in bed all day ,have to get the job done and yes the stock is hard up on the o ring seal, no, not a drip at 400 psi, :)

I know you are all having bets as to will he flood the garage with oil, will the gun drill break in the bore and stuff things up. O all ye of no faith, my moto is ("There`s no such thing as Can't do it")!!. So to all you non believers I`m putting my mouth where my money is, Here`s a bloody long hole in a shaft of hard steel, 29" and entry to exit hole is only off centre by .004" , am I good or what!! :). Just need to ream it ,then cut the rifling, no problem, I think.

Very well done! IF your intrested, special steels and metals can supply pilot drilled barrel bar or should I say used to, comes from sweden.

One that progresses from 1-20" to 1-12" :cool: that would be awesome.

What, a gain twist, I thought that was only with a old Navy .44 pistols. I`d need a sine bar like a crank handle. Now the bore is not bad but just needed reaming to clean up the drill scratch marks and smooth it out and enlarge it for the rifling cutter head to fit. I make up my own homebrewed reamer, it`s a 8"inch long flat bit of steel with a length of hack saw blade solded on one side and ground straight on the sides. Bottom has three pins to hold a packing bit of hard wood, this rubs on the bottom of the hole while the H/ blade is pressed against the top of the hole. It`s the square edge that scrapes the bore as it is wound through and with lots of cutting oil the metal coming off is like grey mud. To make it cut a bit more a thin strip of paper is placed between the packer and pins.

Well they say you can't beat results, I did the same thing when making my Sharps barrel and the drill bores a hole to .442"/ .444" , for the rifling head to slide nicely it needs to be .444" so not much is removed. So yes I`m the clever chap as my Sharps is telling me.

For a real clever #8 wire bit here is the rifling cutter head starting to do it`s job, fine chips starting to come out from the muzzle end. The barrel is tapered , .445" where the drill starts at the breech end and .444" at the muzzle end . If you look hard you can just see the T/C cutter in the slot of the rifling head, it is lowered to go back through to the breech end and is up when pulled through again. The twist is 1-20", six groves out to .457"

It would be quite a feat.

I think it's used on some artillery also. Apparently reduces breech pressure.

I see a set up like that and all I can think is that I could make some awesome knives with that...

I just can`t see where there`s a knife in that pic, but would some chain bar steel make good knifes as I have a bit in my handy stash.

Well you call a boat a her, so a barrel is a she and you must be nice to she barrels. So she is now wearing six rifling groves that I`m giving a good polish to, :omg:, NO not in bed!, out in the garage, and its coming along nicely .

The cut rifling bought the bore out to .458" dia, so rifling is a good .007" deep. With a 1-20" twist should make a good 45-70 barrel, and or for someone thinking of nice big fat lead bullets.

update time....after much fuc.....muc....bothe....coc.... talking to local gnsmithing firm they said they could chamber this barrel for me..took it to them paid $$$$$ waited..got phone call "cant do it,its too tight" (insert too hard basket here) so I after talking around in circles said stuff it send it back to me which to give them credit where due they did promptly.... got it home and scratched head....talked to clever fella in Auckland and decided to DIY with help of engineering mate...well he would DIY it ...first chambering attempt to saami specs felt just too loose so we docked off 75mm and did it again...much tighter/snugger fit..... then the big job started...with a lathe not as big or flash as homebrews the barrel was thinned down in 3 parts as mate couldnt do full length at once...then outside of chamber end was machined to snuggly fit INSIDE a .12ga chamber,the remainder of outside snuggly to internal .12ga size....
a small groove cut into one side of rim to aid extraction (still needs a bit of adjustimication) and we set to go finally

I have looked at what seems like half the internet to decide how to load for this gun/rifle/insert and figgured the top end of lower pressure levels or bottom of 2nd tier would be sensible limit considering Im using insert in older single barrel .12ga.
trail boss was my first thought and had it on hand...BUT even a low velocity load has pressure that is getting up towards my self imposed limit
AR2208 was also on hand and the pressure is LESS for a much quicker load so I put together a few loads with that ranging from 41.5grns up to 45 grns
then someone posted neat thread on home brewing Black Powder...so I had to give that a whirl.....made up 5 loads with 45grns of that stuff to start barrels life.


well the big day arrived and without fuss but much nervousness the trigger was squeazed......what was all the fuss about???? BP loads feel like 1/2 oz .410 loads and are quiet enough to not need ear muffs...both of us suffer from ringing ears but no sign of it at all with this gun....
next up was the single trail boss load Id made up...no bother
then progressively hotter 2208 loads...again no bother.... extraction is more a pain/fiddle than a bother,the shells slip out very easy,its just a matter of getting a grip on them ,we ended up just poking them out with cleaning rod...think I will just carry a pencil sized piece of rod with me to drop down barrel in future.

accuracy isnt tested due to very crude shotgun sight but we were managing to hit 8" square piece of ply at 30 ish yards....which is all I was thinking I needed to achieve for a close range wet weather bush gun....Im sure I will improove the sights somehow and when get a load sorted (thinking the 45grn 2208 for simplicity and as much BP as can fit for grins n giggle load) I will be able to consistantly hit what Im aiming at to 50 yards anyway.

Home brews barrel in her new slimmed down form

Very sexy, you can load 65gr/ 70 gr of black just have to compress it a bit to fit the bullet in at the right depth, don`t use the bullet for this, I made up a brass bit and used my reloading press . You will have to try some .500gr bullets in her, have to get the real feel of the 45-70. :oh noes:, great stuff ,keep the lead flying and get that barrel hot and polished.

managed to fit 54grns of my totara home brew in case behind 415grn flat base...put it in as two lots of 27grns and tamped it down with a .223 case....redneck but seems to work ok.
