    Grandfather's .22

Hi guys, looking for a bit of advice from the brain's trust. I have my Grandfather's Winchester .22. This is the gun I learned to shoot with and spent countless hours chasing rabbit etc as a young fulla. Pulled it out today for a bit of tlc and decided I'm sick of the electrical tape holding the mag tube in place (has been there as long as I can remember). So my question is,how best to fix it.Can it be welded/soldered?. Would something like JB Weld work?.
Also would it be worth re bluing or should I leave it as is.
    Thanks for any input..

MS2.......but Im agricultural...someone cleaver could braize that easy....reblue all depends on how much you want to spend, some guys get good results with cold blue, others not so much.

Gently peen out the lips of the top of the ring around the magazine tube and tap the edges of the dovetail in the barrel then tap the bottom ring across the slot. Do not hammer it up into the slot as that will undo what you have done. I have successfully done this many times before. As the rifle has sentimental value it is up to you how much you want to spend on a rebluing job.

Hey mate, so these dove tail fittings get ruined by people trying to install/remove by knocking the ring side ways, which is incorrect. The correct method is to "turn" the ring into the dove tail. Place the ring in sideways (opposite direction) and then simply twist, thats it. Yours could be buggard though if its been beat on. It looks OK in the photo, you should not have to join it. I will try get a couple of photos for you.

Could also been silver soldered in as those pump guns were churned out.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately looks like the hammer technique has been employed. There is quite a gap between the dovetails. I'm thinking soldering may be the best option. I will rephrase my other question, how much might it cost to reblue the rifle?

I use cold blue product - have done couple of dozen rifles with it and it usually comes up well. Did a 70s Toz recently and metalwork looked surprisingly good.

From experience there are definite tricks to using cold blue - and I don't do exactly what the bottle says. If you want to have a crack at this, PM me with your phone number and I'll go over it with you.

If you have a large gap, solder wont help you much.

If you are going to do it yourself, JB weld will work well. Just get everything squeaky clean (degreaser then acetone, and dont touch the bonding surfaces with your hands once clean)

Then make sure you do a nice job of cleaning up. I find q-tips soaked in acetone do a nice job of this.

A proper gunsmith could sort this out for you properly.

I certainly wouldn't reblue it if it was mine, I'd leave it as is after fixing the mag tube with a little intrusion on the rifle as possible.
The rifle has earned the right to be like that and looks perfect to me.

Standard for most Winchesters of that era. Don't blue it mate, what value it has will be destroyed. Just my 2c of course. Just solder and touch up cold blue as required.

if you did a good job of tinning each part you have the large flat piece for the solder to work on, not the dove tails that would stick pretty good
