Thread: Has anyone made their own trailer?

In England I used a Ifor Williams branded trailer that was brillant, it had a braking system on it where you could reverse without getting out and flicking the override thingy over. It wasn't an electronic solenoid either. Unsure of how it worked but someone mentioned something about the brakes don't work when wheels are turning backwards. Anyone know of these systems? I want to put it on my next trailer.

There is an Ifor Williams agency in Cambridge - they may be able to help.

Came close to buying one of the horse floats. Very nice gear. And they have the auto backing feature you mention, just cannot recall how it works.

Far out that's a brand name I haven't heard in many years. My boss got me to pick one up for sheep transportation. It had adjustable split levels, the one he purchased had three floors in it so you could pack in the sheep. The floors could be removed if you needed to use it for something else.

It was genius. But I mostly just hosed the shit out of it after he returned from the yards, as I was just a farm hand at the time.

Probably uses a "free backing" brake shoe arrangement where the shoe disengages in reverse if any pressure is applied. The Ifor trailers use a mechanical drum brake which is very common throughout UK & Europe, usually of Knott (German) or BPW design. Pommy caravans are the same.
