    Help please.

So I bought this .22lr off trademe for shooting 200m, I had the idea when pissing around in the back paddock and measured out 200m one time that put a thought in my head about shooting that range with my .22lr marlin I already had. I went out the day after since there was no wind but the scope on it was crap 4x32mm tasco and couldn't see the target, so i was just shooting at the middle of the white paper i had the target drawn on and no hits so I went to sight it in for that but then thought nah it will be better if I just get another one, so I did. Any way that went off the main point, This gun I got off trademe didn't show the real condition of the stock and so when I go home next I am planning on stripping off the camo off and redoing it with linseed oil, I saw half a large bottle left in dads shed. Any way all that for a little and probably silly question, do I have to use a wax sealer or anything to put over it? Also going to re blue the barrel, I done it to my 6.5x55 and it looked alright and I have some stuff left to do my .22lr so yeah, I don't think its good bluing but it looks good so what the hell. I'm still learning.

You can see it rubbed off towards the bottom, I don't have any photos of the bottom but its much worse you can see the wood.

I dunno bout the stock finish but i ran the rough numbers through shooter and with 100 meter zero you will have some where around 50inches or more drop at 200:eek:

Oh I have done the shooting at 200m, now I want to make the gun look good, Do you know if I need to get wax sealer or anything to go over the linseed?

I will just throw this in too, has nothing to do with the main question but. When you cut down barrels can you cut what ever length you want or does it have to be cut back and legths to suit the twist rate?

Nah mate, you don't need a sealer, that is what the BOILED linseed oil does, don't use unboiled because it will end up sticky (like a cricket bat) and pick up all sorts of dirt and dust. Also that stock will not be walnut so you will probably have to give it a stain to darken it before you do the oil finish.

    Re: Help please.

As for your barrel length it makes no difference to yiur twist rate but there is a minimum legal overal length that i cant remember. And for a 22 i think somewhere around 14 to 16 inches was optimum

If you chop it you need to recrown the barrel. Find a brass round headed screw some autosol or grinding paste and ut your screw in the chuck of a drill and a bit of paste on the screw and it will drill you a new crown.

Spudattack was spot on. Just wondering why you bought a new 22 to shoot at 200m??? your 4x32 scope would of done the trick as its not like your going to be able to get a group smaller than a A4 piece of paper in all reality. Gun looks cool tho

Yup, big fan of the Boiled Linseed Oil. Really rub it in with your hands hard, so the wood's damn hot from the friction (insert joke here ) - really sucks the oil into the grain. Takes a bit of work and more than a few coats to get her looking nice, but definitely worth it. The occasional rub with a bit more will keep her looking flash. I use it on all my wood.

The Boiled Linseed Oil i get from Mitre10 is pretty dark, and does darken the wood a bit...
