Thread: Howa 1500 7,08 change to 270 simple?

Hey guys and girls , can any of you tell me how straight forward a change from 7.08 to 270 is, I just want a definite answer if it's as simple as swapping a barrel or more involved? So I have a howa 1500 7.08 but I want a 270 so my question is do I just need a howa 270 barrel or is action length, bolt face ect different?

Same bolt face, different action length. Sell it and buy a new rifle if you feel you must. Personally I wouldn't bother though 7mm08 will do 90% of what a 270 will

That didnt actually answer my question and yes that thought had crossed my mind, but I brought the 7.08 new but I know I wouldn't t get my money back and I know where theres a 270 barrel, hence the question

So far as I know the bolt length and barrel are both different sizes from 7mm08 (short action) to 270 (long action).

Same design, different animals.

Thanks @Nick-D out of curiosity with action length I thought howa 1500 were only long action so I'm glad I asked

@birch, not straight forward at all.

Even though the bolt face is the same, running a long action cartridge (270) in a short action is not a good idea.

The magazine will be too short, and you may also run into case ejection issues.

It would be easier to open the boldface to magnum, and potentially ream the 270 barrel to a short action version like 270 wsm

Nah man, tikkas are all the same, howa has the 3 action lengths

So the answer is no maybe you could ream your 708 to something else but personally dont play with that cal myself

Can I ask what you're wanting to gain by going from 7mm08 to 270?

Birch, the 7-08 and the 270 is ballistically exactly the same thing. Keep your 7-08 and love it. Any particular reason you want to change over to 270?

270 is a lovely calibre, but your going to spend a lot of money to own a 7mm with a different name and case.

MAYBE off er to do swap with someone wanting to go in the other direction..... the yellow site is called TRADEme for a reason....
a 30/06 or 25/06 would also provide correct action/bolt for a mighty poohseventy.

I'm curious to know why you want to change as well.

I own both calibers, and in the same weight stock the 270 has significantly more recoil...
