    Lightbulb Howa 1500 bedding.

Here is a big tip for bedding the howa 1500 short action.
    BED THE KNOX.
I use capitals because it’s so important.
After 3 failures doing the 1 o’clock test after bedding I really had to think and not follow blindly what others say.
4th time I bedded the first 1 inch of the barrel(parallel section)
    Success. Solid as a rock
I can elaborate as to why if asked

Good solid advice. Been doing it that way for yonks and my guns all shoot the living daylights out of whatever your pointing them at.

Yep you an equal amount of bedding in front and behind the front action screw. Actions where the front action screw goes into the recoil lug need some of the barrel bedded. The howa action is real easy to stuff up.

Another bit of advice is to add a couple of layers of tape to the parallel sidewalls in the bottom section of the action. Means it won't pinch in the bedding after recoil and randomly throw shots high. Same idea as packing the front and side faces of a rem700 recoil lug.

Yes, please do. I'm keen to learn and understand more.
I've bedded a few of my own rifles, another Tikka to do soon.

I reckon the Howa I done years ago is bedded for part of the Knox. Just what I've read or interpreted from my reading and attempts.

If you have pics we might all see something of interest or importance

    Jaco,stug and sixtyten are correct.
Jaco because he already does it this way, stug because he understands the forces acting on the action by the action screws, and sixtyten because you need clearance in parallel sections to stop pinching.
The reason I wanted to only bed the action and not the Knox was that I wanted to be able to change caliber barrels using the same action and keep a completely free floating barrel whilst maintaining the best possible action to stock relationship.for accuracy of course.p
As to why you need to bed the Knox, in my opinion, is that the front action screw tends to pull the recoil lug down and needs support both in front or behind, just as stug said.almost equally can be said for the tang.
Every action to barrel to stock combination is different, so we really need to think about the mechanics of each situation.
Nathan foster has detailed instructions on tikka bedding in his book on accurising rifles.also on the the net.
As a side note. Pig hunting around Wilcannia paradise.

    Apologies,
That should read, “ needs support both in front and behind “
