Thread: Ideas for a cheap, simple Pikau/Veshmeshok

OK, have not built one but wanted to make a thread for ideas on these handy wee things.

Firstly, don't ask me how to pronounce Pikau or Veshmeshok!

I saw pictures of different Pikau's in NZ hunting books and it seems Ridgeline used to do a fleece one.

Like the idea of a wee daypack kinda thing that is light enough that you can tote it around folded up in the big rucksack and pull it out for a day hunt.

The main contribution of this thread would be a recommendation to do away with any device to secure the top with, just borrow the idea of the Russian/Soviet Veshmeshok where a single, continuous bit of webbing is attached to either side at the bottom of the bag.

This becomes the shoulder straps once a hitch knot is formed with the loop, which slides over the top of the bag, tighten and et voila!

I’ve got a canvas meat bag pikau, rolls up about the size of a tin of tomato sauce. Straps are seatbelt type webbing.

You put a small stone in the corners to tie the straps too.

Yeah huntech had been my first option, but have been out of stock for months unfortunately. Still, this one is NZ made so hopefully good quality.

Another option is to have everything in your pack in pouches with belt loops, all you need to do is transfer 'stuff' from pack to belt and that leaves room for meat..... Depends on the size of the animals your after!

Have a fleece pikau but it takes up a surprisingly large volume in a pack.

I have a ridgeline one for day walks . My only complaint is over summer it gives me a sweaty back so I now have a ridgeline day pack with the mesh on the frame which rests against back and bag itself sits an inch off my back so it has air circulating between bag and back for really hot days . Start using pikau again this time of year when cooler as I find it much more comfortable to carry .
I have a meat bag , around 25 ltr, that folds into itself with inbuilt pouch and shoulder straps , weighs nothing, for carrying meat that goes into my big pack or small enough to go in bumbag and also has a belt loop to wear on belt .
Cup of coffee for scale....

I purchased one last night for less than $30..
The dimension is 60cm high and 45cm wide.
Still waiting for it to arrive but I’m looking forward to it.

Sorry, @Moa Hunter - got to disagree with you there. Used mine about 4 times, have had to fix it twice. Keeps giving way around the front zip. Now I can only use it with a pillowcase liner. The zip access is a good idea, but proves the KISS principle.

That's a real shame, I did sew my one onto a bumbag so that it has the belt for support like a pack does.
