    Jay Doubleya project

Have been wanting to either make a stock from scratch or reshape an existing stock on one of my JW15's for ages now, I decided I had very little to lose so just got stuck into reshaping.

Here is the rifle before I started, I just don't like the plain and boring stock!

To be clear i'm a bit of a butcher when it comes to this stuff but calm down, its just a JW15.

    On the want list:
    1. Raised cheek piece (I like big scopes)
    2. Fatter and shorter forearm
    3. Palm swell
    4. More vertical and properly fitted pistol grip
    5. Brench rest style left hand grip under the butt
    6. Thumb up or thumb over position on the pistol grip

I had everything that I needed but I was doing this away from home so was pretty limited to tools, and I didn't really have much time to put into it. The only things I used can be seen in the photo, angle grinder with flappy paddles sanding pad, dremil with flappy paddle sanding pad, screw driver, scraps of sandpaper, a silky, a rag, some car body filler, some primer and some paint.

I first drew some lines with a vivid to get an idea of what I wanted to do and roughed up the stock where I was going to apply the filler.

Once I popped open the filler it got pretty ugly pretty quickly and I was really doubting that this was going to work.

    First coat

    Second coat - Getting uglier!

After the second coat had dried I decided to have a hack at it with the angle grinder and flappy pad, Shit does that thing make quick work of it or what! After a bit of shaping, cutting and smoothing with it I put on a 3rd coat of filler to fill some gaps (which I forgot to take a photo of)

Once the 3rd filler coat hardened I got back at it with the angle grinder and once it was roughed out I switched to the Dremil for some of the finer work. It was really easy to get all the lines in the right places and work the shape of the grip to fit my hand perfectly, very satisfying to feel how each change made it more and more comfortable. Bit of a quick sand down - I know its going to have a pretty crap finish and the long term plan is to paint it in truck bedliner texture paint so getting a perfect finish just wasnt worth doing and I didnt have the time for that.

    • Piccatinny rail on the forend
    • Trigger work and action smooth out
    • Work out a way to clip the 10round CZ mags to the stock somehow.

    Step away from the bog...!
I like those projects were there's nothing much to loose, jump in boots and all, and say, what the fuck am I doing.
It looks like it will turn out fine though. Just putting the time in to get a nice shape and finish.

    Definetley one of those projects!

Its black now and looking ok, will be better in bed liner paint for sure.

This is my first time using bog, and first time shaping a stock so its a learning curve for me. Knowing now how quickly the flappy pad in an angle grinder eats wood for my next one I would just flatten the stock off, glue and screw square wood stock on and then re shape it rather than build the bog up.

Good on ya! I love tinkering with stuff too but I don't think I'm brave enough to do that to my rifles. Only one way to really learn though and that's by getting stuck into it.

Currently steaming and sanding a Parker Hale stock that will be oil rubbed. So nowhere near as dramatic

Cheers, I figured worst case scenario I would end up having to order a nice Boyds one to replace it, and that really isn't a bad scenario!

I used some bed liner from super cheap, worked well. From memory lots of light coats was the key.

Yep. Light coats and spray from a reasonable distance to allow the drops to "build". Too close and you end up with a semi slick mess.

(Automotive painter by trade, so probably not the best advice)

    Flappy disk eats all!

I found can be just as effective with course sandpaper as you don't end up taking far too much off and have to add more bog!

Good going Mintie! It's got a working gun look to it. Building up the existing stock is definitely an easier option than making one from scratch....
