    Making a firearm...legalities

    Hey all

Does anyone know what the legalities are around making your own rifle / shotgun if you have the relevant category on your licence?

I remember a few years back one of the guys at the auckland pistol club made a .44 automag from scratch from castings he made himself but I don't remember legally what he had to do. BTW the automag was an awesome beast of a thing!

    cheers
    Tracy

    Talk to your AO.

I made a black powder Canon.

Didn't have to do anything as its classed as an unrestricted firearm.
@homebrew.357 recently made an awesome Rifle he may have some advise for you.

    Cheers

You can make one, so long as you do not intend to sell it. If you want to sell them you need a dealers licence.

Note (3) - A dealer's licence SHALL be issued. I've heard stories of PNHQ being a bit fussier than that when it comes to dealer's licences.

That's what I heard, in the black powder clubs guys making cannons and muzzle loading rifles for them self's, the no no is don`t sell them. So away I went, the rest is history as they say. And when I had my gun security checked , " O you've got one of those old muzzle loading guns" . didn't say I`d made it and they know is to hard to do anyway.

    Of course you fucking can't.

Read the Anti-Personnel Mines Prohibition Act 1998 and the Cluster Munitions Prohibition Act 2009.

    Yeah Nah @systolic

I can't find the sections of those Acts where it says you can make them for personel use.
@40mm how you getting on with this project?

    Got any pics yet

Legislation only tells you what you are not allowed to do. Unless something is specified as illegal, it is OK. If you have a standard firearms licence then you are allowed to make A category firearms for your own use. You can subsequently sell them after a suitable period of time. Bear in mind that any commissioned officer of police has the power to check (and reject as unsafe) any firearm (Arms Act, Sec 59).

well if an officer of the law were to say my home made firearm is un safe then i would expect that officer to be a qualified/experienced gunsmith.
