Marlin 989m2
Picked up this 989m2 a few weeks ago at a good price made in 1966 trigger was terrible but apart from modifying action and a good clean up I’m very pleased how it’s turned out, stock needed a good clean and raw linseed and turps treatment and came up well. Managed thumbnail group at 50m before mods off wooden bipod which I was pleased with but trigger heavy and graunchy so mods required.
have been doing trigger modifications ie floppy disc return spring on trigger, one coil off firing spring, polishing sears and a real good clean up of the whole action and got the feel and weight of trigger pull improved nicely but still not to my liking so have just fitted ball bearing on trigger blade where some shooters have an adjustable screw, I just fitted
a 2.8mm ball bearing so a third of its size is raised from the trigger surface and it has improved the feel and smooth as. A nice light first stage and a very good release on second stage. Forgot to take photo but will put one on next time it’s apart.

Pleased to have this old Marlin dancing only used cci sv and put the Nikon 3-9x40 on it and looking forward to using it.

This makes up for the one I should have kept, just the one gun now so it will be used well, I will have to try mini mags as they worked well in previous one.

I had one similar many years ago, but the tube fed model. Most accurate 22 I have ever used.

Just picked up a 922m it was in a bit of a sad state but it’s starting to come together slowly, barrel was a mess but now cleaned that up shortened it to 16 inches re-crown and blued and looking better, the stock looked a mess as well a good clean sanded down and in the process of getting raw linseed oil and white spirit into it and it’s coming up good. Just about to take trigger assembly apart and improve where I can then fit a buffer which was missing and hopefully find a magazine for it, all good fun eh! Might make a single shot mag to get me going then get one from USA if I don’t have luck here.
Happy shooting.

This UK company Riflemags.co.uk exports everywhere and I believe its easy enough to import a mag into NZ. They have the 992M mag:

Be careful about chopping rings off the hammer spring to lighten trigger. As the springs wear this is known to cause light striking - fail to fire - and not easy to get replacement parts these days.
989 looks a treat - well done! :)

Very pleased thanks with the 989 it is shooting real nice with cci sv I’m the weak link in the accuracy stakes but not too bad
The 922 probably won’t have as good accuracy but we will see.Attachment 258835 989 at 50m
Thanks for info regarding mags.
Certainly impressed with Marlins rimfire micro groove barrels.

Got Marlin 922m all together today but still have to make a buffer up so not trying it till then.
its come up well the stock drank lots of 80% raw linseed oil 20%. methylated spirit mixture and just needs a good polish with a soft rag. Still after a mag but can wait.
all together cleaned and trigger is much improved as well as having sear polished up.
barrel free floating except for first 1.5” where I bedded it and the action to stock.
So all up cost for gun $89 Attachment 258992Attachment 258993a bit of time for clean up and barrel shortened to 16” and re crown so all happy.
Trigger assembly pretty straight forward to work on. Barrel bedded first 1.5” as is the action.
Now it can go in the safe with 989m2
