Minties 1022, and of course its a shortie!
I'd been giving my mates shit for years about their crappy 1022s, but one day the modularity got to me and I decided to jump on the band wagon too.
About 16 months ago a good deal came up on here for an 80s manufactured 1022 in good shape but with a pretty weird carved stock on it, whoever did it did a good job but it just wasn't my thing. Around the same time another member here was selling a beautiful Volquartsen laminate grey stock which caught my eye, only problem was the barrel channel was set up and bedded for a heavy fluted barrel. I bought both but didn't actually get my hands on either of them for about 6 months as they sat at friends houses.

When they both got to me I got my hack saw out and chopped the barrel down nice and (legal length) short, I then set the barrel up in the dogs on my lathe and profiled it right down in OD all the way back to the V block - this was to drop weight and also create some shroud volume. I removed the bedding in the stock (which was lovingly graffitied up by my mate that had been holding onto it) and figured it was about the right channel size to run 25mm carbon fiber tube as my shroud.

I spun up a shroud end with a female 1/2x20 at one end and a male 1/2x20 at the other end and milled 3 exhaust channels into it. Then I made up a nice matching hidden thread protector and the receiver end of the shroud. The thought here was that it could be used just as a short shroud with a lower than normal muzzle report, or you could add a further silencer to the shroud to make it super ninja quiet.

Next came some mods to the trigger group, I installed the Volquartsen target hammer set (massive improvement!), did the bolt hold open release mod, added an extended mag release, polished the bolt and everything up and installed a bolt buffer.
I went with a Tourbon sling, Altas copy bipod on a alloy rail I installed under the forearm, 3d printed suppressor and a Hawke 4x32 mildot scope. The scope may seem a little sub par but I assure you it is decent glass, light weight and the 4x32 actually works really well on this platform.
As always its not quite finished yet, I plan to remove some wood from inside the stock to lighten it up a little, bed it properly and add an extended bolt handle.
On the range it performs flawlessly with CCI subs or std, 10 shot groups at 50m are around 10mm and open up to around 20mm at 100m, which is just less than 1 mildot down when its zerod at 50m making it pretty easy to judge holdovers.
So far its been my go to rig for pest work, it has taken down many Pukeko, Rabbits, Plover, Hares and Mynahs, some out past 100m.
Moral of the story.... maybe with some care and attention the 1022 isn't as crap as I gave my mates a hard time for.
