Thread: My brno model 1 restoration and a question on stock finishing

So Christmas just been I picked up a brno model 1 of the trade table at a shoot
It was in very poor condition the barrel had been cut stupidly short and a steel tube slid over and welded in place to make it over the 762 again probably due to a bulge id say
And the stock had been pourly refinished to the point where it was really not restorable
It was cheap as and I like brno’s so I brought it with the intention of building a target rifle from it
Actually have a green mountain target barrel on the way but plans have changed so I’ll put it in the Cupboard for a rainy day I got it home and with the help of the Neighbour and his vice removed the barrel and chucked it in the rubbish

It was sitting in the safe barrel-less waiting for the new barrel to show
I went down the local gunshop to get a couple of things and by chance the model 1 target rifle project came up
When chatting to the owner he wandered off out back and walked back out with a model 1 original but missing bolt and mag Which i had sitting in the safe even better both rifles were 1951 he said $100 it’s yours
So I grabbed it got it home and testfired with my bolt
Perfect
I put it on here for sale as im going to build a 10/22 with the barrel that’s coming
But I decided I should restore it

The stock on the original rifle is in poor shape aswell it has a peice broken from the heel
And it had Polyurethane on it
But all the original checkering is there and I have a good mate that will do a good job at repairing the heel


So i done a trick I learned To preserve the checkering I coated the stock with paint striper and Covered it with cling film overnight then brushed the finish off with a old tooth brush
That got most of it

But I did have to do another coat for a few stubborn bits
I sanded down to 220g so it’s ready to have the heel repaired I have a nice peice of walnut for it


Ive just finished stripping the metal work and im sending it for a reblue job I could do a cold blue but really want it to be done Properly so will get a proper hot blue done

Now i do have a couple of questions
The guy who Polyurethaneed the stock also sanded the checkering so it is very shellow
I was wondering about deepening it up advice and tools etc

Also I plan to use danish oil it’s what I use on all my stocks i have done in the past
But I have never bothered to stain them just stick with the pailer colour
But i want darker wood on this so I will need to stain
What’s the best walnut Colour stain to use under oil
I hear it has to be a ngr stain
Wondering if the Birchwood casy stuff that comes in tru oil kits would work with danish?
