Can anybody recommend a good paint for barreled actions that gun oil won't remove?
matte black chimney flue stuff in a can works well - got to bake it to make it harden though - an old oven would be good
A product made by Valspar called LIC 43 two pack system hard as the hobs of hell.
For best results for a matt finish apply with plenty of air coming out of the gun and apply very lightly many times.
Heavy coats will cause paint to gloss.

Have some of the last one I did....the one I just did is locked up in the booth

and sitting on a 5% gloss from memory
Looks good
Looks bloody good lethal.
Where do you buy it? How much?
Linkup paint supplies, its not to deer for the paint... hardners isn't that cheap, you would have to ring as I get trade prices... From memory I pay $40 a litre + $90 a litre for harder but its a 4-1 mix so you dont need much harders and they should poor some off and mix you a 10% gloss to matt brew in a lesser amount as you need F/all 100ml should be plenty but 250 is usualy as small as they go.
If it has surface rust a spray of Brunox primer/rust kill (can get it in spray cans but $60?) should prevent any future issues but if its mint steel no primer required
I just use a spray can of Wattyl Super-Etch on my Ruger 44, It's cheap, easy to use, quite tough, easy to touch up & looks pretty mint
Got a pick Phillipo? That action looks mint leathel. How many jobs would you get out of a can of that stuff?
Here ya go B, sorry it's not a close up pic but the finish is'nt to bad won't be as flash as leathels but it is a fair bit cheaper ( about $15 a can )

Lookin good, for some reason when I first looked I laughed thinking you had the rifle on a cat
Nice pig. How does that paint wear Phil? Do you prime it first or na?
Those example look bloody good. One question. Do you have to mask off the inside of the action/chamber before painting, or does it all get coated?
I have an old 303 that I am tidying up and painting is the way to go I think. I tried re bluing out of a bottle but it just doesnt seem tough enough.
I drop a case in and lightly tap it in to make sure its all the way in .... and a small peice of foam at the other end in the barrel
Thanks Leathel. I will give it a go.
Cheers Phil will give it a stab
Yea and is it safe on other surfaces i.e stocks or is the etch only for metal

Just sprayed up my Howa with super etch. Looks awesome

Looking forward to a pic also.
Where did you buy from, thinking about doing mine as well

just remember that an etch paint is not UV tolerant and it will eventually chalk up a bit (depends on how long it spends out of the cupboard ) and a primer isn't water proof, some do pretty well for a while but they will let it through eventually :)
if it gets wet alot yes... even if you put primer back on top for that "flat look", one good layer of colour should be enough to seal it from moisture (gloss seals best)
Cheers Beavis
Leathel, my application is for a bush pig, only out the cupboard 2 x a month, was thinking if it gets scratched or looking a bit shit, just spray another couple of coats on, cheers for the heads up though.

what colours are available in the Wattyl Super Etch spray cans ? the wattyl website is not very helpful...
anybody tried the Rust-Oleum Camo spray cans ?
RustOleum.com
Nice,worth the wait:yarr:
Your rite there leathel, super etch does need a top coat, it is porous so will rust with a bit of time and will mark up easy I would think, that LIC is great stuff and bloody hard as!
Beavis, how is your paint job going in terms of wear and tear ? Did you spray anything on top of the super etch in the end ?
ta, was especially interested in the action side.
did painting the bolt have any effect on the action ?
i have to decide if the new project is going to be blue + traditional wood stock vs painted action (black) and painted stock (olive green ?)... it going to be a bush basher, so not sure on longevity if I go the paint route.
Action cycled fine. Actually looked quite nice.
