Hi All,
who has had a rechambering job done recently? I am wanting to re-chamber a 25-06 to .257 Roberts AI.(Yes I know a lot will say this is a backwards step.) So I was just curious how much it generally costs these days as its been a long time since I've had any work like this done.
I just now have to find a gun smith in the north island who has a reamer for one......

I had Arthur Cleland rechamber my 284 late last year which was $300. This did include a little bit of other tweaking and mag work though.
Just go .25/08 I'm sure Arthur can do it as he has done another that I know of.

using my reamer including the return postage 8 or so years ago with mitch maxberry was under $153 including setting the barrel back and engraving
work is fantastic highly recommended

Yeah. You could get Brian to drop the rifle at Mitch's and then just collect it when it's finished. He does a lot of work for Brian and Jeff who you got the rifle off. Talk to Brian about Mitch - Mitch's workshop is just around the corner from him. I don't know if Mitch has the reamer you want though. - you would need to check. He makes a superb job.Quote:

Silly question. Instead of the machine work having to reset the barrel back, is there another barrel floating around that you could start with?
Then you have the original barrel you could put back on if it all turns to custard
Obviously have to be a common model.

@Bill999 wasn't meaning cocking up the reaming, more so the project calibre not performing the way intended.
My thoughts were if you had the same barrel off a different rifle it was only a change over and a ream. Possibly cheaper?
Plus concerning the common models, try finding a good used barrel for a P14. there is bugger all around for 303's anymore let alone other calibres. Plus they are a fatter tenon meaning you almost need a larger than normal blank or the extra machine work to barrel stub a more common tube in there.
Unless you have a p14/17 then you are more likely to have a lot more barrels to pick from so not so bad. Just my situation.
What difference would the same barrel make?
The same unwanted cal you already have?

And I don't think this is the normal but when I got my sako 75 back from fitting a suppressor fitted by gunworks it went from stacking bullets to more than a4 sized groups.
They (Robbie tiffen) insisted on fitting a new barrel to get me back shooting (my only rifle at the time) the only 6mm barrel he had at the time was a trueflight ultramatch to which he said "you are lucky today" sort of thing,
Sometimes shit happens but there are some good people out there that worth dealing with
Gunworks, trueflight, Rod woods and Mitch maxberry are some of these
@Bill999 you are correct but you aint picking up what I'm putting down. we are looking at things from 2 different perspectives
I was more meaning actual velocity rather than accuracy. Also me being continually short on funds I am always looking at cost v potential. I cant afford to do things twice and while I would like new barrels for a couple of my projects that just isn't going to happen.
In my thought process here it was flawed as the cost of another used barrel for the project would probably be more than just machining the original barrel back a thread or so to allow for a proper chamber clean up. Unless the model doesn't have enough material to allow that to do so.
All comes down to him having a good chat to some of the good guy gunsmiths you have mentioned for the best option
