    Seeking ideas....

I'm in need of your minds to work out the details of my next project.

I have just picked up a nice 270 Win Weatherby MkV from 257weatherby on the forum. The problem is I don't shoot 270 and have been sticking with 260 Rem and 7mm Practical as my hunting chamberings.

So I was wondering what path I should take with this sweet 9 lug mkV in either 284 or 6.5? I'm thinking of putting a Hardy carbon barrel on it in any case. I don't really have a purpose for it as yet but I'm sure that I'll find one from your advice.

Thoughts? Am happy to wildcat and build rediculous adaptations. I would like to stay non-magnum though.

    Cheers,

    Falvs

Now come on, we don't want to start that argument do we?

I've been an 08 cartridge man for quite a while now. Maybe it's time to expand my knowledge to something more European?

It is going to be an expensive project:
Throwing everything away ( or selling it to get some money back) just to keep the action, then fitting an expensive barrel barrel on it.
    And maybe changing the stock?
6.5 -06 standard or improved or 280 ai comes as a logical choice.
The question is what do you want to achieve with it?
Good luck with it. Post some pics

Ps: starting with a weatherby action is definitely not very European .

    Friwi,

I understand the Weatherby USA link, but I'm a sucker for the 9 lug action. I've shot F Class for the last couple of years and could build a target rifle or a long range plinker. Maybe a 6.5x284 Win to push the 140gr a little faster.

Does anyone have a good range / hunting rig set up they recommend?

Is it the Mk5 ultralight? If so it makes a decent platform for a 284. I had one and i shouldn't have sold it.

i got a sauer weatherby euroa in 8x68s caliber( mk5) action so that stuffs up your idea that weatherby isn,t european Friwi but in saying that weatherbys were made in the sauer rifle factory when weatherby first started off and to really throw a spanner in the works it is a lefthand action

I know of the weatherby made in Europe , it is still an American design wherever it's made .
The Colt Sauer ( Sauer 80) was not much of an American rifle exepting the stock.
The weatherby vanguard is not an American rifle but a Japanese one made on the same assembly line as howa based on a sako design...
I could carry on like that for another dozen brands that cooperated with manufactures all around the world.

If that weatherby is of European manufacture, keep it like that it is worth a bit of money if in good nick and with a good barrel.

    Northdude,

I've been thinking of a 6.5x55 for a while. I don't know how much of an advantage over a 260 Rem it would provide me?

I could look to the 9.3x64 as a solution. Change to the role of the rifle to a big hit calibre and seek out some bigger beats. I'm missing a large game calibre (excluding magnum 7mm) and could use the 9.3 in that role.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I'll keep a post running with photos as I plan to tackle the job myself. Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes or watch with a disapproving frown at what I try to do.

I'm keen to learn to chamber at home and build my basic smithing skills up over the next two years. I'll post as I go along.

    Falvs.

    30-06 TIM ?
30-284 could be seated right out in the long action.
Or you could do something silly like 22-284 with fast twist and heavy bullets?
"Hunting and fishing" fucking over licenced firearms owners since ages ago.

308Win One chambering to rule them all.
