    Someone's old project Mauser

Just picked up this 1895 Spanish mauser carbine off the yellow site, made in 1899 and converted to .308 presumably by spain, it was clearly someone's project possibly some time between 80s and today, as
It's since been converted to 22-250 rem and has a nice vintage 2.5x Lyman scope with uneven height mounts and shaved down bolt handle.
I was wondering if anyone knows someone who mightve done this and if I could get more back story? Pretty nifty little carbine and I'd love to know more.

They were a neat little rifle.
Had a shot out of one back about 86-87. Had a saddle ring. It was a 308.
Always meant to get one but never did.

They were converted from 7x57 to .308 CETME which is not the same thing as a .308 Winchester, its lower pressure.

I would reload lower pressure loads for that old 96 Mauser if its been chambered in .22/250

Yeah a 7x57 would be good. A bit agricultural but still good

The history of the rifle is best viewed here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMp-y84xZHc , if you are into it ?.
But basically it started out as a 7x57 cavalry rifle , then converted to 7.62x51 ( not CETME ) for a Militarized Police units?? and then sold off . Then a commercial outfit converted them in the 80's ???? to all sorts of .473 case sized rounds . And the Cetme round , a 7.62x51 with a 129 gran proj. , was only for the Cetme rifle to somehow become a machine gun but was a failure and was scraped .
As for the weak action myth there is 5/8 th's difference between a 93 and 98 in practical terms and even a weak 303 can be converted to a 375 H&H.

Yeah I've done so much scrolling online on the topic of action strength etc and the cetme rumors and I've yet to find an actual anecdote of one blowing up from people using commercial .308 (or similar pressure like 22-250) however with that in mind it's still 125 year old action and I don't plan on getting close to shooting even medium-hot loads through it, if nothing else to preserve the already short barrel life of 22-250. I've got plans for a load with modest ballistics similar to .222 that should suit fine as long as it's accurate.

Just out of curiosity, is the bolt round or does it have a flat bottom ?

These were converted to 7.62x51 CETME. Later Mauser 98s were converted to 7.62 NATO.

But I doubt they would blow up, they just may have the bolt lugs set back though, just wear the old gun out faster than it would have. I had one in .250/3000 of all things.

If the bolt has a flat bottom its a '93.

    hi.
I had one of these when I was 18, bought it from tisdalls in hamilton and was told at the time that these were going to be issued to israeli reservists in 1967, but somehow a container load arrived here. I shot a lot of deer with normal 308 ammo with no ill affect, but they used to bark and bite almost as bad as a 303 no 5/ jungle carbine.
    cheers
