Had something really special come along recently, this lovely old presentation Adams revolver.

Not very often you get to see guns of this quality and in particularly good condition given its age (late 1800's)

The issue was it was only operating in double action. An extremely careful disassembly found that a small spring had failed, stopping the sear engaging during single action function.

The tiny spring sits under the mainspring and presses on the single action sear.

Not an easy task but a small replacement spring was made, shaped and heat treated and it now functions again. It it is fair to say it is still not perfect but later models used a different spring design for that function so I guess that was changed for a reason.

You say that but it is a cased presentation piece never used and who knows when it broke

A very tidy example that has had a very peaceful life!

If it's a 45cal, I have a tin of ammo here supposedly from around 1860, when the guy I got it off's family arrived on banks peninsula.

I, like it.

Sorry I didn't take in the case as well, the only tools left were the cleaning rod and I think powder flask.

It is the Adams Model 1867 which had a fairly short production life and a desirable collector's item. The Tranters, Webleys and other brands started to make severe inroads into the Adams design and by the late 1880's Adams stopped production. The business continued as sporting goods retailers until WW2. The successful Adams Model 1851 self-cocking percussion revolver was the World's first solid frame revolver and was largely responsible for the closure of Colt's London factory in December 1856 after slightly less than 3 years production.
