Stock Options Rem 700 SA

Hey guys,
I've just purchased a Remington 700 SA to turn into a Long Range tactical .308 build and am Looking for some options on what stock to use? I already have a scope, just need a stock and new barrel.
I was thinking about a 20" Truflite Heavy barrel, the scope is a Sightron S3 8-32x56.
What's everyone's opinions?
I'm also undecided between a chassis and regular stock like a Mcmillian or HS Precision?
Also, is it best to buy in NZ or is it cheaper to buy from America?
Do you need to worry about import permits?

I personally prefer a regular fiberglass/carbon stock to a chassis as they tend to be a bit lighter and nicer to carry about the place. McMillan stocks are higher quality but you will pay about twice as much. You can normally find an HS stock on TM for about $400ish. You will need an import permit from the states if its valued more than $200 I believe.
There are also NZ made stocks that will fit the bill if you choose to go that route.

Do you already have the scope?

Redhawk rifles - bought my stock in, no paperwork required. Its A-Class and certainly bring it new in for less than TM second-hand.

Thanks for the info. I am leaning towards a full Aliminium bedding block.
Is it worth saving the extra money and getting a Mcmillian stock over a B&C? What is the main difference between the two? Plus H-s stocks?
I want to use AI detachable mags and I see that Mcmillian will inlet for those bottom metals, how difficult would it be to do this too a B&C or H-s stock?
The rifle will be mainly a prone shooting rig, not planning on using it for hunts where I need to carry it long distances.
@Rwt yes I already have the scope, had a for a previous .308 that was a non shooter so needing to start again using better parts not just a factory heavy barrel.

Right on the money with a truflite ultramatch barrel.
I have a rem 700 .308 with a 22" truflite ultramatch barrel, trued action, sitting in a XLR carbon chassis. Too heavy to take hunting, but a joy to shoot at the range. 1/4 MOA with 168gr Amax.
I just find the ability to adjust everything on the chassis for a custom fit to be a real bonus.

I brought the sps tact heavy barrel 26" SA308 and put it into an aics. Yet to shoot it

I'm good thanks tuckerbox, I might go for the Tac21 MDT chassis. I have found them for $599 in Australia so seems like a good deal.

One of those things you see and think mmmmmm......

The cheapest solid option is the HS-Precision stock off a PSS rifle , then a McMillan & then a AI chassis .
RE the McMillan , they have a wide range of stocks , and they are all very different , soo if you go McM , you need to actually get your hands on a few different models to get a idea as to what you like/want .

If you go AI chassis , I would be more inclined to go over to the newer AX chassis , over the AT model , means you can go to a low C of G type bipod like a Phoenix ( UK ) .
Or a Kiwi senator stock , maybe an option .
RE , suppressors , the MAE muzzle forward all SS cans are hard to beat for the dollars , they are around 230-250ish , I have quite a few on my 308s , Rem700 , Parker Hale M85 & M87 , and depending on the dia of your barrel at the muzzle , you can go 5/8 if varmint weight , and 18mm on thicker barrels etc .
RE , barrel lenght I would tend to go to 22 over a 20 , RE twist , 1-10 .
Use a 20 moa steel rail , like warne etc .

RE scope , if you have not got one yet , I would have a look at either the 3-12x44mm or 4.5-18x44mm Bushy LRHS scopes , they are approx 1500-1800 here .
They are very good glass , good adjustments , I have the older 3-12x when it 1st came out , wicked scope for the money , made in japan , by same outfit that mkaes NF .

I might put out a looking for add to try find one of thos HS Take offs as I have one on a .22-250 of mine and it works quite well.
As for the barrel length, why do you say go 22" over the 20"?
Scopes I already have a Sightron S3 in 8-32X56 with the tactical turrets so that'll be going on straight away.

As its only 2 inches more , will not make it into a un-weildly thing , and maybe a good comprimise , had heard in a heavy barrel 308 off a rem700 , that a sweet spot was 21.75 inches for accuracy & also pretty good for velocity etc , up to you , however , once its been chopped short it cannot grow , if its long , you can cut more off if needed .

yeah , mainly wanted to mention the big differences in the McMillan stocks , especially the grip/swell area , some are big & some are small , and then you have sporting type like the M40 HTR , and say the McHale with a vertical grip style stock , the biggest grip on a McM I have handled was the A4 , the rest where more normal , if that makes sense .
And as you see with their website , a ton of options & colours etc , simply a one off custom stock in most reguards , therefore you need to know alot about what you want on it , and then the colour etc .

Yeah righto, @ChrisF. Do you know where you read or heard that from? Would be interesting to see if there is any actual test fire reports on people who have tried it and then gone shorter to see if it changes? I would be keen to try chopping it a couple of inches at a time, but this build will cost me enough without that extra cost.

Some Yanks did tests on basically heavy barreled 308 rem700 , and they came up with I think the 21.75 inche long being the best for accuracy , I think it was all around rigity with a curtain dia , may have bench rest guys , simply the shorter you go the more rigid the barrel will be .
However as you also want resonable velocity , its up to you to figure out what you are happy with .
