Stock splicing advice

I have a stock which someone has had shortened and the relief for the nose cap recut, I want to splice in a replacement section to take it back to original length. Once I get my hands on said replacement section I am wondering what is the best way to fit them together. I was thinking of cutting the shaped piece for the nose cap which is currently there, then doing a butt join with a couple of pins or wooden dowels to keep it inline. It's probably going to be pretty obvious that the join is there, being perpendicular to the grain, but I can't think of how else to do it. My wood working skills are nonexistent.

I would seek advice from a furniture restorer. If not, perhaps a vee cut so wedge fits into opposite (female) shape. Could still dowel it.

Do it roughly as you have outlined

Make a jig to keep it all lined up and use dowels
Clean the existing wood with solvent to loosen up the oils in the old stock
Do this for a number of days and allow to gas off for a few more days before gluing
Put releasing agent on the jig
Lots of clear epoxy
You need very sharp clean cuts
Over size insert piece
Use a long bar clamp so the force it in line and some small clamps to hold it to the jig
Blend it all back together slowly

I have plenty of walnut off cuts here if you need some

Mark Novak on Youtube does some work similar to what you are trying to achieve. Look up his videos for some inspiration.

If you can't hide it make a feature of it? Make cuts with router then put a different coloured piece of timber in as biscuit and sand to flush, could alternate length of cuts etc to give staggered looK

There are no bands as it's a Carbine stock unfortunately

Go to some trouble to find a piece of walnut with as close to a matching grain as possible, then splice it in a 90 degree vee in the vertical plane. The edges will then be curves on each side and be less obvious, and will virtually disappear with a good grain match and the artistic use of a dark walnut stain. If you use PVA glue make sure it is for exterior use. Remember that the neater the join, the stronger the bond.
