Hey, got to say i have been missing from this place for a little while and apologies to gun nut for not getting back to him. By the way the knives arrived from pay it forward!
Anyway about 18 months ago, seriously I blinked and it was gone, Gun nut kindly sent me two old knives via pay it forward and it would be fair to say they had seen better days however a project was hatched and like many of them it took me almost 2 years to get my shit together.
Well in the last couple of months i researched and planned how to turn the knives into something usable and the pictures tell the rest of the story.
Only the bottom knife survived as the other was just too small and damaged to do anything with it- well for my skills anyway.
The knife profile and grind was re-done using homemade jig and a new handle of mexican bocote wood, brass bolster and antler sandwiched between brass was added. Cutting a hidden tang is not fun in any way shape or form!
Once it was all fitting a good helping of 24 hour epoxy and then a lot of time on the sander followed by wet and dry to 1200 grit, polishing the blade up to the same grit and the handle was finished using linseed oil and a touch or turpentine and done.
Sorry also kind of forgot to take photos along the way.
Happy days and kept me out of trouble for a little while.
Now back and in use and should have a couple more years of life left in it.
Now started playing at making knives- it's a slippery slope :-)
