    Toz17 magazine catch pics.

Hi all, as per my thread on ‘doh’ moments I am resurrecting a Vostok/Toz17 22. It needed a good going over, it had no rear sight, no magazine and the stock was a grimey mess plus a previous owner had sanded the main part of the barrel with pretty coarse sandpaper/emery cloth.

It’s appearance has been sorted and the action degreased and oiled with BreakFree.

I fitted the rear sight I got from a forum member and (eventually!) got it fitted correctly.

I also got a magazine from another forum member and that’s where the project again stalled.

The magazine catch on the rifle doesn’t seem to actually ‘hook’ onto anything on the magazine.

Can somebody who owns a Toz17 please take a pic looking up the magazine well and another looking from the front of the magazine well looking back towards the trigger guard and post them on this thread?

    TIA.

I don't have mine handy, they're in storage at the mo. However the mag has a hand filed stub on the back edge of it from memory about 2/3 down that the catch hooks on to. A mag from one rifle will not necessarily fit well to another. As in the mag catch being loose and the mag dropping low in the well or in it being too tight and not catching at all. The stub is I think a piece of the metal body cut and pulled out and maybe welded. All from memory.

A Mossberg Plinker 10 rd mag can be made to fit with a bit of emery paper exercise. I use one all the time. PM me if you want more details. I brought mine in from Brownells before regs changed a few years ago. H&F may have them also.

    good luck

Well I got some great advice from @Jhon who unfortunately is not in a position to provide pics, as such can anybody else do that for me?
Apart from fitting a scope (already have rings) getting the mag to stay in place is the last chapter of the refurbishment!

Nearest one 80km away - but I did drop in and the only Toz17 in stock was a really old single shot.
    But thanks for the suggestion.

Catches vary a little - here's a side on pic. Had a Toz 17 but sold it plus mags to @GlenM recently. If you pm him he may be able to give better photo:

Maybe copy this photo and expand it to show little tabs better. I know right hand one had also a dot of tig weld to help mag catch hold it better - you can see it.

Yes I forgot how far down that lug is. These photos should make things clear @Finnwolf Just a little tig weld spot filed into shape would probably do it. Im no welder but will be important not to heat distort the mag shape. Brazing I think would possibly overheat things. Just mark where the catch rests on the back of the mag and weld slightly above so you can file back to good fit.

Also check there is not a top stop that locates max mag depth in the mag well.

Thanks everybody, I will look at adding a tig spot to the lug, my other thought was to solder a tag onto the catch as the issue seems to be that the catch does not extend far enough to hook onto the lug on the back of the mag, there’s (guessing) 2mm gap between the pair.

Had to get Mrs Finnwolf out to the workshop ( in her dressing gown no less!) to pull back on the upside down rear sight while I leaned with all my weight on a screwdriver to push down on the spring enough to free the rear sight.

This time it was her who got the skinned knuckle instead of me!

Putting the rear sight back in the right way up was not too hard…

yup, it is clear that Toz used poor peasants to hand file each mag stop to fit the particular rifle. I have had to adjust some of mine and label them so as not to be in the field with the wrong mag.

Another question: How does the mag release work?
I’m used to a catch or button to release the mag and my Toz17 doesn’t seem to have one as such.
