Wood and Antler

Just thought I'd get in everyone's face with some pictures of Rainy Day Projects that I tinker with to utilize my collection of Antlers and give me another dimension to a lifetime of wandering our mountain lands
And I've always got my eye out for interesting or unique lengths of driftwood and storm damaged timber and sometimes the two come together, and sometimes they don't, but if l didn't try I'd just become another boring has been with worn out legs and misty eyes .......

The sticks are a mix of Manuka, Lancewood, Pepperwood & Wineberry

Cool gear. I like what I see.

Nice work on the dolphin inlay. That would make a great handle for somwthing special.

Il ike your knives .theres a certain beauty in plain knives well made. Ive had a crack too. my main hunting stick is a piece of mahogany the late FIL used as a broom handle -Iadded a carved mallard head Iwhittled in the cave over a couple of ales and its stood me in good stead .
My other stick is a cedar tree branch from a mates place .Icleaned it up oiled it and it resides beside my bed .good for closing my curtains at night when er indoors aint lookin. this one i reckon would suit a deer antler end but as yet havent found one to suit.

There is something very therapeutic in making things out of natural materials. My late father made sculptures and walking sticks from natural materials that he collected. I also remember some walking sticks that were carved with snakes and the like by Japanese POW at Featherston late in WW2. The carvers were not allowed knives or chisels for obvious reasons so used bits of broken glass. Must have taken ages and been hard on the fingers as well. Must have helped with the boredom.

Kotuku.... if your ever up in the Mainland, I'd offer you a piece of suitable antler.
But having said that, I'll understand if you decline. I know that there's a memory involved in using a piece that you've carried off the hill yourself.

id be quite happy to accept your kind offer .would a courier /nz post carry it though or if some kind member was travelling between chc -hastings and could pick it up for me .

My offer still stands kotuku, but just sending you random antlers won't work. You need whatever your going to attach it to with you, and I can assure you, its possible to go though a dozen heads until you find a piece that fits, not just your projects raw material, but also your hand. Its vital to get a feel for it in person.
So if you find yourself heading North some time, bring your stick with you and look me up :)
