    wood and leather

A while back I had a Savage 20g/22 mag dropped in for a refurbish so after a strip down I reshaped the wrist and grip, added a grip cap, re set the off center butt plate, thinned down the forestock and added a forend tip. There was a going over with some walnut dye as the customer wanted a darker finish and then multi coats of stock finishing oil.
    Before...

    After

With that done a side of espresso cow leather was ordered in for the required leather carry bag, and after a bit of time working on patterns I have everything cut out and readdy for assembly although I have to wait for a couple of buckles so cant proceed much further untill they arrive as they need to be attached to the pouch before that is sewn on and that needs to be done before the bag is sewn together but I have knives to do to keep me busy untill they arrive.

Note the cat on my rocking chair at the head of the table. I have the chair untill I finish breakfast and he has it for the rest of the day.

Cats hey, mine (I say mine, but you know...) waits until everyone else has gone before he shows himself. Car out, roller door down, cat flap thwacks - that order Mon-Fri.

Now, where would one obtain some leather offcuts these days? I'm needing to make a cover for an axe and thinking I might as well do it properly as I can't lay my hands on the 100mm layflat hose I had for that purpose...

I buy all my leather from NZ leather but that is all in either russet double shoulders for sheath work or a side in the the case of the dyed leather for the gun case.
    How much do you need?

These are pretty good for small jobs.

Some progress on the gun bag with the pockets sewn on after the buckles arrived. Hnadles marked out and ready for them to be attended to as well.

So my axe head is overall dimensions 164x122mm - I'm guessing I need with the fold something like a piece 260x150mm to allow for forming and the fold and stitching etc? Plus a piece for a strap of some sort...
