The two shot at Pipiriki were escaped from a fenced hunting lodge not far away. The biggest bull is mounted and on display with the plaque reading "North Island Record Tahr - Free Range". It was not an illegal import but had escaped. The hunting outfit don't have tahr there anymore, too hard to keep in captivity. And to be fair a big part of the tahr experience is the country you find them in.

I've seen a picture of Dave Shaw head skinning a Sambar at the Footy Field on the Mohaka.
I knew Dave quite well back then and he assured me the picture was legit.

1970 our neighbour shot a Rusa back of Gisborne at Tahunga saw the head - now numbers of Rusa in that area but all got out from a safari operation a local station there tried to set up - have not heard much since but a keen hunter with a property at Ruatoria apparently let sika go up there - but that sambar on Moki road North Taranaki thats a mystery - definitely a sambar have seen the head - lot of info that a deer farmer some years ago at Tarata had rusa - but when I went out after being asked to investigate it he had sold and moved - you just never know what you are going to see
-
My understanding was that it had escaped from Lindale animal park Near Paraparaumu.
