    Depends n what its for and what its being shot from.

    With my muzzleloader its pure lead as the projectile obturates ( expends ) into the rifling when the black powder charge goes off.

    With breech loaders it can be harder lead as they can be sized down to the perfect size for a particular rifle and don't need to be as soft.

    My soft lead 395 grain 50 cal projectiles are not that soft though.
    Recently full pass through red stag in front of right shoulder and out last three left ribs ... so a reasonably long wound channel.
