You mount it to the tree (directly or on the included swivel mount) then whack a dirty great bike lock through the holes in the side (16mm Ø) and round the tree.

If you mount it direct to the tree without the swivel mount, I guess you could do without the lock.

It's never going to stop a really determined or well equipped thief but it'd stop opportunists for sure.
