    Update after Jetstar flight:

Firearm. They checked the case was locked and checked my FAL. Then they wrapped caution yellow tape around both ends of the rifle hard case. That was it.

Ammo. They asked to see my form declaration and acceptance that I pre filled out and printed. They asked how much I had, was it over 5 kilos and was it individually packed in original box. It was and I told them it was in my check in bag. They didn’t want to view it but asked again if it was under 5 kg (I only had 20 rounds). That was it.

They then checked in my bag and walked me over to over sized baggage area and sent my hard case to baggage.

When I collected everything an airline staff came over eventually with my rifle/hard case. Said they didn’t really know what to do with it. I suggested they look at my FAK which they did and handed it over to me.

It was a pretty seamless journey but I got the feeling staff weren’t all over the rules.

    Anyway just an update FYI.

All good. Yep they aren't all over the rules by any stretch, when I was working at airport I got asked a couple of times what to do about firearms (they knew we had FAL's due to having to deal to birds and rabbits) so it was a natural to ask us I guess.

Have flown with ammunition only on a few occasions (Air New Zealand) their biggest concern was the whereabouts of the firearm, least bit concerned about the ammunition, most of the staff are well versed, a few have no idea

We just came back from Stewart island with Air NZ and what a shit show when it came to the rifles.
We had to go via Auckland and we had 4 x double cases that 2 guys brought in and just placed them on the floor of an open office on the customer side of the desk.
No one was in the office and the sliding door was left open with public going in and out.
After 20 minutes I had to go and tell someone that there was firearms sitting in a public area with no one watching them
It took another 20 minutes before someone came along and said are these yours and that we could take them.
No one checked our FAL or even if our names matched the tags.
