Ammo Prices Are Set to Spike Due to World Wide Shortage of Gunpowder

Vista Outdoor, the parent company to several ammunition makers such as Federal, CCI, and Remington, has warned prices for ammunition are expected to rise in 2024 due to a worldwide shortage of gunpowder.

In a letter sent to customers, Vista Outdoor warned that they would begin to increase prices on all of their ammunition products due to “an anticipated global shortage of gunpowder.”


Vista Outdoor, a parent company to many firearms businesses, told Newsweek that it will substantially increase its ammunition prices due to “an anticipated global shortage of gunpowder.”

The Minnesota-based company confirmed the authenticity of a December 1 letter sent to customers that it would go ahead with an across-the-board increase of its ammunition and gunpowder prices on January 1.

“Due to world events our suppliers have notified us of unprecedented demand for and an anticipated global shortage of gunpowder, and thus has increased our prices substantially,” Vice President of Sales, Sporting Products Brett Nelson said in the letter. “We must therefore raise our pricing to help offset those increases.”

Companies that will increase their prices include Remington, Alliant Powder, CCI, Federal, SEVI-Shot and Speer.

Remington, CCI, Speer, and Federal Ammunition donated one million rounds of ammo to the Ukraine Armed Forces in December of 2022.

Powder and component sales seemed to have slowed going by the continual email bombardment received from retailers I've supported in the past.

It's going to be interesting to see how long the crunch lasts - with the Israel/Hamas situation going on, the African issues, the unrest in central Asia at the moment, of course Ukraine plus all of the other little squabbles that are too numerous to mention (Venezuela?) there is just not the manufacturing capacity to even make a dent in the demand.

On the plus side of that equation, the world's stockpiles of munitions are getting chewed through but the down side of that argument is that people in power are going to want to replenish stockpiles as soon as the mad panic is averted. Decades of high intensity manufacturing of military paramilitary and police/internal govt orders before the retail market gets a look in...

Well, yes and no. What the main issue is is that one 155mm cartridge consumes more precursors than the average sporting shooter burns through in a decade. The 'global shortage' they are anticipating is here, now and it's simply due to the fact there aren't enough manufacturing lines and plants to keep everyone in business. That's why we have no Trailboss from ADI for example - it means a line needs to be retooled for a powder that doesn't have any military application, delaying BIG contract work. Not going to happen. As far as pricing, it costs the manufacturer's each time they retool or divert and if they don't deliver the big contracts on time there are costs in the contracts usually. With no lean times to run plants making less common and more exacting products for the recreational market (and the stuff they make for the big contracts is not like 'this is AR2208' - it's powder of burn rate blah blah so if we load this caliber with that much it will meet spec) the costs go up.

I wonder if the recent acquisition of Vista by a Czech billionaire (and loss of American companies) may also have something to do with it.

The powder shortage has been around since last year along with all the comparisons of how much the military (read Ukraine) is comsuming compared to civilian use - an almost irrelevant comparison.
There has also been massive stocking up going on in the US military and virtually every police department in the States.

Enough there for about 50 rounds of 20mm as used in the LAVs!

Probably so mate……just bought 500 RDS of 7.62x51(308)Winchester 149 gr FMJ (FOR $499 USD)……….last month it was $420……..

As per usual the yanks love to spill the beans about a shortage of anything firearm wise which in turn sparks panic buying of everything etc etc etc….good for business and Xmas sales
