Ammo Tin Storage

Hey Guys,

Currently sorting out my storage for my firearms license. Was planning on installing a gun rack in the roof and storing ammo in a cash box hidden in a different part of the house.

However, reading the regulations, I am a bit unsure whether they are saying that ammo can be:
- Stored in a cash box ....... or in an ammunition box in secure storage... or in a stout locked cabinet
or
- in a cash box or ammunition box in secure storage.... or in a stout locked cabinet

Pretty much just trying to figure out whether a hidden cash box would be enough for storing ammo or whether it would also need to be locked away in something else.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just be careful storing gun in roof...it gets uber hot up there

Local arms inspector explained i to me as 'not being readily moveable' - i.e. in a tin that could be taken from a shelf.

If in the tin the fact that it was then locked in a seperate cupboard was fine

if you bolt the tin to the wall or a permanent shelf you should be good to go.

I did this with an ammo safe. Some will let you use the separate compartment in your rifle safe, other inspectors wont.

In my recent renewal I was told very firmly that if the ammo was locked in a tin, that is all that is requried, the tin does not need to be secured to anything or locked into another compartment. It really does seem that different vettors have different interpretations of the rules.

I also have boxes of ammo in a gunsafe in the same compartment as firearms of a different calibre (with firearms of same calbre in a separate safe), that is fine too and is even required in some cases, although again some vettors seem to disagree.

That’s correct. Just needs to be locked in a box/ammo tin. Remember the original purpose was to stop the ammo from being accessible to kids etc and stored separately from the firearms

Hmmm, my ammo is in a safe that isn't bolted to anything. I had to prove it couldn't easily be moved, ie inspector couldn't lift or push it.

There's nothing there about it having to be attached to anything, though I do think the police can be a bit wordy: some diagrams and bullet points would be nice. I made a storage box out of ply which is firmly attached to keep most of my ammunition in and then I have a cash box from Bunnings for the stuff I take with me when I go shooting.

Ihave a couple of ammo tins with assorted ammo.These are all locked and secured to a chain which is secured to the plate my big safe sits on heavily secured to the wall .other ammo is in locked drawers .the tins can be take my truck and secured to another hefty chain if Im out on a scoot and shoot .does this work -well bugger me and call me nigel it usually takes 10mins to sort out the keys and access the thing . given Ima realist security is in fact placing obstacles in the way of the malfeasent wanting your property we have a multilayer ,featuring wife and daughters "hello noddy what flowers would you like on your coffin".true you wouldnt want to cross er indoors or any of m y kids!!!!!!

Ben I'm in the same area as you so imagine will have the same vettor, or if not, the same reading of the rules. My ammo box is a hard lockable plastic container. I have it out of sight, bolted to one of my garage shelves and locked. The fella is coming on Monday. Can you see any concerns with this?
