Another stunning decision by the judiciary, wtf.

three charges of driving while suspended and one each of failing to stop for police, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of cannabis, possession of cannabis seeds for supply, possession of a pipe to smoke methamphetamine and theft of petrol, and 2 sets of scales, a straw used to scoop out the drug (meth) and 45 small bags were found in the middle console.... and for all that he gets, wait for it ....... sentenced to a total of six months and two weeks' home detention after taking all discounts into consideration and disqualified him from driving for 18 months.

I for one would like to see the NZDA National Body, or any other firearms related organisation appeal all soft firearms sentences by criminals as manifestly inadequate, but I guess it comes down to cost.

The tinfoil hat nutter in me is making me think that the people in power who want more government control are interested in soft-on-crime approaches. People in a nation under more stress and poverty rely more on government handouts. People who rely on handouts are easier to control. For more government handouts there must be an increase in taxes, after all they might promise that the more taxes you pay the more criminals they will punish or the more compensation they can pay to businesses affected by crime. With higher taxes, the government ultimately has more power and control over how everything goes.
I can't think of any other reason other than pure incompetence as to why they are making things more difficult for the average joe in regards to firearm ownership, but there is so little punishment for illegally armed criminals.

To JessicaChen's point and your image - I don't want to specifically address a particular country, so I'll just ask, that anyone that's interested in governments and their approaches to populations, have a look at Russia, the USA, and the UK and see what the messaging is, around current events.

    In my view

Russia - Putin wants to be a modern Tzar
USA - recent failed attempt to have an Orange Tzar
UK - currently removing a Tzar wannabe.
    _____

    Regarding the OP

I've got access to multiple Lawyers and Judges. Often there are personal circumstances that are not publicly available that would explain the sentence - like - "he did all of this whilst the real criminal held a gun to his child's head" or similar.

    BUT

Just on what's reported, I agree that "unlawful possession of a firearm" should be punished by - six months in stocks in the village square, with no shelter from the elements.

And that's exactly why we would go to the clanger for an indiscretion longer than the people mentioned here. It's called social engineering and is very popular with the woke crowd and their judge/politician/lawyer/academic brethren. I guess I could argue that I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks...

Your obsession with orange man is quite disturbing, have you discussed this with your annalist?
