The article quotes a Mr Keenan as saying "It might be a family heirloom, it could be the family member who owned it has died for example and the family just doesn't know what to do with it." but I suspect these firearms are probably NOT the ones that will make any difference. If my logic is sound, I suspect if person A has granddads old service pistol at home (illegally) then it is likely that it has been in Australia in granddads possession for many years, in which case the new owner is probably a long time Australian and therefore sees Ozzie as his country which means he is not likely to be a terrorist.......
Far more likely is the illegal firearms will mostly be the ones that "vanished" after they bought in their draconian gun restrictions. In which case the "We know that we've got a big illicit firearm market in Australia, 260,000 illicit guns we believe are out there," would be entirely of their own making (consequences of poor govt decisions)
