Like him or dislike him - Cam Slater at least has the balls to publicly call out this sort of behaviour , and we all owe him a debt of gratitude for that
Police have now launched an investigation, with a Police National HQ Superintendent contacting Slater, requesting him to remove his post on X. Slater, however, says he will not comply, stating: “If I took down this article… the Police would treat that as a win and deal with this in darkness.” :slow:
Any fuk ups like this need to see the sunlight- full & honest disclosure- so the holes are fixed.
Fix one hole another will appear elsewhere. Just wait until when AI truly comes of age...
This story is such a strange one. In and of itself its a big deal to leak info. And then even more-so as both that firearm and the person licenced to own it have to meet the highest level of our system so Police should be extra careful too.
But to be not only someone else's info about a highly restricted item but sent to probably the last person in NZ that Police would want involved.
Conspiracy theorists' field-day
Its not a theory.
It actually came from the very people charged with keeping the data secure, and sent it a third party who had no involvement/responsibility with that particular firearm...
I'm watching this story with great interest.
Of all the people in NZ to misdirect a sensitive email to....
Let's hope Nicole will pick this up and utilise it for the failure it is....'if indeed it is a valid failure or breech'. If it is....then the biggest push back needs to happen. It's effectively a system failure.
I saw this on the COLFO page but has the media picked it up?
Surely you posted that in jest , sir .Quote:
has the media picked it up?
The NZ media ? Really?
Thats just a silly notion......
The cynical old bastard in me can't help but wonder about this info been sent to the worst possible person (from the FSAs point of view).
Conspiracy theory time
What if the "secure" data was hacked and sent to Slater ? It would highlight how insecure it is either way.
Secure information systems usually rely on layers, checks and balances. Apart from screening your staff, I would have thought that a minimum of two sets of eyes going over data leaving the 'secure environment' is one of the simplest ways to avoid this sort of information breach happening.
Off topic but the same thing.
My better half goes out of her way to have nothing to do with social media, or internet, but recently got a E Mail from the IRD saying sorry but your details have been leaked to face book. Top man Government level, fobbed it off as a minor breech of no importance. Were couple of hundred people info leaked, question is what the hell is IRD playing with facebook anyway!
She is pissed ‘the age of information’ ,where nothing is safe. Every day I have the uneasy feeling the world is dumbing down, now wear is my tinfoil hat:wtfsmilie:
Not a couple of hundred. Couple of hundred thousand people's data.
“What is particularly concerning in this case is that IR apparently had no idea that these incidents, including the intentional sharing by IR staff of identifiable personal details of 268,000 New Zealand taxpayers with social media platforms had occurred”.
Yet, I cannot talk to the IRD on matters concerning my wife of 51 years! FFS Even with her permission
Anything you want to know just go to Facebook.
Tis a fuck up of spectacular scale. This should not be surprising to many here.
We see these data leaks time after time be it FAL details, medical, IRD or whatever but we never see anyone being held accountable. All that ever happens is we get an oops my bad, sorry bout that.
Its utter bullshit! There should be accountability, reprocussions...people should lose their jobs. Employees in these positions should know without doubt there are standards that you are expected to work at and there is a price to pay when you fuck up but we never see or hear that.
And some still dont get why some are hesitant to do the rego thing. They are just a bunch of idiots in their eyes and are causing all the gunshops to close....wtf
Just for clarity this is not a hack, a breach of the system, or even a systems failure. This is human error. It may not even be related to the registry itself, it fact from the description it sounds unlikely.
Human error or human mischief???? For as long as there is information held in system that "someone" has access to and someone else might want....there will be room for wrong doing... The point made that little head rolling is seen is a fair point. If you look at the information stored as a companies stock. Giving it to someone else is akin to theft.
