Thread: E cat safe placement

I have new living arrangements underway (i.e. I just bought a house), wondering if an endorsed safe can be in the basement if the entrance to said basement is from outside, not through the house, does anyone know?

I have had that exact setup, its no diferent to the storage being in a unatached garage and there are countless people in that situation

Put a deadbolt on the basement door. Reinforce it if you can.

Try to put the safe where it's hard for someone trying to break in to access the locks and hinges or swing a hammer.Out of sight in a cupboard helps too.

Make sure the keys are in at least the same level of security as the guns themselves.

Layer your security.

Wouldn't hurt to whack a PIR in there and hook it up to your alarm as a separate zone, provided that you don't have rats and whatnot moving through the area but yeah, as Res said it is the same as in a garage or outbuilding

use a dual (microwave/infra red) detector. it will ignore small animals. i have mine set to ignore mass under 15kg. no false alarms with the cat.

As long as it's secured to the dwelling I don't see why not.
I'd be more worried dampness in a basement though.

Thanks for the advice everyone, it's actually dry as hell under the floor, but i'll try to get a safe dehumidifier, I'll be adding an alarm of some sort and will try to reinforce the basement door as much as possible, the walls are concrete and the only basement window is just big enough to crawl through so I will look to add bars on the inside. It's a good area with neighbours who have views of all sides of the house and keep an eye on each other, at least one of them is also a shooter, so I'm pretty happy in that regard.

Sucks to have it in such a place, but it's just not practical to have a safe in a house, especially if you rent.

@gonetropo I want to put a PIR inside my (locked) wardrobe where my E Cat safe is. A system that will sent a text to me if tripped.
Possibly have some options to be future proofed so I then include the whole house in the system. We have an old alarm system already, but not currently working.

Any recommendations please?

Really like this idea

yes its possible to put a pir in a small enclosure. most alarms systems will domestic dial (connect to a phone not a monitoring service)
there are lots of cheap alarm systems out there, there are allot of monkeys who put them in too!! there is nothing worse than an alarm that false alarms or even worse doesnt go off when an intruder is on the premises.
depending on what area on nz you are i may be able to tell you companies to avoid.

Yeah, I used to work for the parent company for INTEK in 2008-09. Lots of dubious stuff on the market now.
I was thinking of a reed switch for wardrobe door and a vibration sensor for the safe, especially if they try to grind the underfloor plate up.

Don't call it a basement. Stock it with dried food, put the gunsafe in there and call it a doomsday prepper bunker.

There are cellphone apps out that can use a cellphone as the alarm

I've got this pretty roughly from a mate who is actually in the know but it goes kinda like this-

1 Buy cheap cellph on prepay with ok camera

2 Install security app and set it up (needs to be in coverage area obv)

3 Leave in wardrobe/garage/shed like a cross between a PIR and a game camera - anything that crosses the cameras field of view will generate a series of picture texts from the phone straight to your phone

If I have got it right you can text a code to the phone to switch it off when you are accessing that area and arm it again

It would need to stay plugged in on permanent charge and if some thief knows it's there and hides his face or you are a long way away it isn't so good but it might be the right sort of deal for someone seeing as us NZers are so notoriously tight hahaha

TL;DR Can do monitored alarm with a cheap prepay
